Rooms that would cost others thousands cost her hundreds. How does she do it? With patience. She has, over the years, scoured the Nashville Flea Market, Goodwill, and Craigslist to make her home a unique and comfortable place to live.

Eclectic with a side of whimsy and a dash of smarty pants. From their “bitch please” embroidered hoop, to the taxidermied deer over the fireplace, to the poppy colors used in the home, you get an impression of two quirky interesting ladies you’re going to have fun with.

Name: Thomas and Tara Steffen Location: Nashville, TN Size: 2,650 square feet Years lived in: 3 years; Owned Who buys a house based on the wallpaper and lighting fixture in the front entryway? Tara does. She fell in love with her mid-century home the moment she walked in the door. This house, with its bright pops of color and classic lines, is just perfect to house her ever-evolving collections. Gallery walls are quite the trend these days and Tara has turned them into an art form.

Name: Kathy McGee and Matt McGee, their two children, and two golden retrievers Location: Franklin, Tennessee Size: 3,900 square feet Years lived in: 8 1/2 years Kathy has been in love with design ever since she got to choose her bedroom’s paint color in the 7th grade. Surrounded by that lavender, she read magazines and dreamt of being a writer. Many years later, she started the blog My Interior Life. After that, her design business was the next step.

Stretching a dollar is sometimes a necessity, but it’s also fun. Scouring Craigslist, flea markets, discount stores, and garage sales are a way of life for her. In fact, she’s gotten so good at finding Craigslist deals she started Curating Craigslist to share her finds with people in the Nashville area.

She studies designers like Kelly Wearstler, Kelly McDonald, and Jonathan Adler. She mixes together fabrics and rugs and lighting like nobody’s business. Yet she has somehow made a home that isn’t stiff or formal. And have I mentioned she lives in a “builder’s special” home?

Name: Dana and Brooks Tucker Location: Frankin, Tennessee Size: 3,400 square feet Years lived in: 3 years When you’re married to an artist with a thriving decorative paint business, you tend to have a few custom finishes in your home. When you’re a design lover with a flair for blending patterns and textures, well that takes it to a whole new level. Dana’s home is a palette of calming, soothing colors, which immediately puts you at ease. Which is great.

Her home encompasses all of these styles with the deft hand of a true aficionado.

Not the kind of reputation your mother warned you about acquiring, but the kind that lands you some of the most exciting design projects this side of the Mississippi. As the principle of Chad James Group, he’s designed spaces all over the world.

Name: Wayne and Debbie Goodwyn Location: East Nashville; Nashville, Tennessee Size: 6,800 square feet Years lived in: 21 years; owned Much like their East Nashville store Wonders on Woodland, Wayne and Debbie’s home is a wonder. A wonder filled home of art, style, and whimsy. Everywhere you look there’s something interesting. You want to hear the story behind every piece.
