Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: We purchased this home a little over a year ago with big dreams of bringing it back to life. We were in love with the vaulted wood ceilings, time-capsule mid-century vibe, fireplace, brick feature wall, and location. We were less than thrilled with the leaking roof, crumbling kitchen, and worn carpet. We got to work updating the kitchen, a bathroom, ripping out carpet and, finally, decorating and finding our style in this house. It is a delight to decorate around the warm-toned ceilings, which allows me to lean into rich jewel tones, earthy wood accents, and playful textures.
My husband and I live here with our 3-year-old miniature dachshund, Louie. We knew we wanted a unique mid-century house and were delighted to stumble across this one. I work from home, so having spaces that I truly enjoy is absolutely necessary. Part of my job involves baking (I work for a food blogger), so a very functional kitchen with tons of storage was a must.
Our home is three bedrooms, two baths. We have a full basement with a bar, a crafting space, and a living room (in addition to storage and laundry). Our house is unique for our street, but not our area. There are so really gorgeous mid-century homes nearby, but our street is mostly brick ranches and tri-level homes. We love that our house is unique.
We are passionate about bringing this slightly neglected, but beautiful home back to life. We haven’t made any major changes to the home, adapting to fit into the existing layout.
I am someone who loves color and playing around with a rich, vibrant color palette has been a joy. With orange velvet curtains, a few deep green accent walls, our black fireplace (painted from white), and a deep blue kitchen backsplash, I have a lot of room to play.
I love to source vintage furniture (a lot of our furniture is sourced from Facebook Marketplace) to fit into our home. Mixing those pieces with modern textiles and accessories really fits into my vision for our home.
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Mid-Century-Modern (counts as 1!), Eclectic, Colorful, Warm, Inviting
What is your favorite room and why? The living room. It’s south facing, so it gets the most incredible light year-round. It has an original brick accent wall, original wood floors (that we found under carpeting), a gorgeous tall, narrow window, and it’s super cozy. I spend a lot of time working in here, and Louie finds the sunny spots for his naps (and to bark at passers-by).
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The rust orange curtains in our living room! The color is so dreamy and the price was unbeatable. And our wood dining pendant.
Any advice for creating a home you love? Take your time; it took about a year for me to find our design language in this space and I’m sure it will be ever-evolving. But also don’t be afraid to go for the bold choices. Our accent walls and black fireplace have added so much dimension and coziness to our space. I do not miss the all white walls one bit.
Oh one more: Identify the features you love about your existing home and then play those up. For us, that is the original features we love (the wood ceilings, brick wall, wood wall in our entry, etc.). I would never consider painting or covering those up, but instead lean into the uniqueness and quirkiness. It makes design more fun!
