I write about house tours (but I love a good kitchen and kids' room article). My work can be found across AT Media, including The Kitchn and Cubby. I’ve been writing about home-related topics for nearly five years and love seeing how people make their homes unique.

How big is 300 square feet? A quick Google search tells me it’s roughly the size of a single-car garage. Living full-time in a space that small requires multipurpose furniture and clever thinking. Well, Rachael Harvey lives in less — a 275-square-foot Manhattan apartment — and has one of the smartest products I’ve ever seen (for less than $80).

In the video above, Rachael’s apartment is featured in a compilation of apartments costing less than $2,000 per month. While that budget is still steep, in New York City, it generally means downsizing. However, it doesn’t feel like small-space living, thanks to multifunctional, storage-focused furniture like this mid-century modern-inspired coffee table

This Coffee Table with Storage Has Many Perks

What makes this mid-century modern-inspired coffee-table special is that it has more than one function. While Rachael has a dining table that can double as a workspace, many studio dwellers don’t (guilty in my former apartment!). When open, the table provides almost a foot of storage, but the top also elevates to become a workstation or dining area.

What sets this piece apart from nesting tables or coffee-table ottomans is that you get a large top (almost 40 inches!) and, with the side niches, you can display coffee-table books or use it for more practical storage, like laptops or electronics.

The configuration Rachael has in her home comes in five wood stains, but you can also try other layouts. Some even have LED lights installed to make it easier to grab things in the dark. This table has an over four-star rating from over 8,000 reviewers.

When Rachael moved in, unsurprisingly, her biggest design hurdle was figuring out storage. But by purchasing furniture with multiple uses, such as masking clutter, she’s able to fit more into her small home without feeling overwhelmed.
