Prior to working at ATM, I earned my degree in Culture Writing and Criticism from NYU, and I interned at publications like CNN Underscored, TV Insider, Texas Monthly (I'm a Dallas native), and more. When I'm not writing, I'm usually at the movies or browsing in a thrift store.

As someone who’s always had a love for the fantasy genre, a secret door is one of those things that I’ve always dreamed of having in my home. You know what I mean — when the character pulls out a certain book on a shelf or presses a button, and it reveals a hidden passageway or room behind it? The whole thing is so magical and mysterious! However, I’ve never entertained the idea of re-creating it for long because it always seemed so far out of the realm of possibility. I mean, the structure is featured in movies like The Addams Family and Batman Begins for a reason, right?

Lately, however, bookcase doors have been on my mind again, and they don’t seem quite as far-fetched as they used to. First, I saw one on TikTok, in a video where a creator shows the results of her husband’s DIY project. (It’s totally gorgeous!) Then, as I was watching Netflix’s No Good Deed over the holidays, another bookcase door popped up to my surprise. So, I did a bit of digging, and I found out that a brand called Murphy Door actually makes them. Instead of having to build it from scratch, The Home Depot has everything you need to make a secret bookcase door a reality in your space!

What Is the Murphy Door Hidden Book Case Door?

Though the cool factor is definitely what appeals to me, Murphy Door also makes an excellent point about bookcase doors like this one: They turn a seemingly unusable space into ample storage. The structure transforms the empty door frame into a cabinet with open shelves, and you have the option to include anywhere from three to 10 of them. Overall, it can support up to 300 pounds, so any amount of books or heavy decor is fair game to put on display. Still, it’ll glide open smoothly and your belongings will stay in place. Another benefit? It gives the room behind the door an extra level of security.

The bookcase is pre-built and includes all the necessary hardware for installation — though you will have to install it yourself. However, some shoppers note that it’s not too much of a hassle, especially if you’ve installed a prehung door before. If you or someone you know has a knack for DIY, you should be golden. On the website, you can ensure it fits to your needs exactly: You can select which way it swings, the trim, wood type, and whether it has a lock or a closed cabinet.

One shopper gave an excellent tip in the reviews, noting that if you want to move new furniture into the room after installation, make sure it’ll fit through the frame with its new measurements. Out swing doors will lose about 10 inches of pass, while in swing doors will lose 6.

Average Rating: 4.1/5

“Went in perfect and looks great. Should be pretty convincing and secure if the day comes that it is truly needed. I would recommend this door to anyone. Quality looks to be there as well. Shelves will certainly come in handy.” — Tjoe

“We *LOVE* our Murphy Door. It’s not only the coolest thing ever; it really helps with noise reduction. Delivery was free to my driveway, which saved us more than the cost of the great professional we hired to install the door. Install took 3 or 4 hours.” — Vikki

“It was very easy to install if you have ever hung a door. Not much different than any other door. I bought the unfinished model and stained and sealed it myself. It required very little sanding, and the finish came out great.” — Gerry
