How Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent Spend the Perfect Night In
Designers Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are the epitome of a power couple. They rescue homeowners in desperate need of renovations through their TV show “Nate & Jeremiah By Design,” they started an exclusive furniture line with Living Spaces, and they are fathers to two kids, Poppy and Oskar.
But when they’re not running around fixing homes or chasing after their energetic kids, what do Nate and Jeremiah do to unwind and spend time with each other at home? We got to ask them ourselves, but decided to make things a bit more interesting by questioning them individually—resulting in some answers that were similar and some… not so much. All in the spirit of a cozy night in!
Set the scene
Your perfect homebody scene in 5 words:
Nate: Baby bath, Netflix, Postmates, noodles.
Jeremiah: At home, kids, having dinner.
Are you alone or with someone else:
Nate: I’m definitely not alone.
Jeremiah: With Nate.
Night-in uniform:
Nate: Same blue sweatpants that Jeremiah considers his night-in uniform, but we fight over those.
Jeremiah: It’s not sexy. Baggy sweats and a t-shirt, and I have a beanie. None of it makes sense, it’s just cozy.
What two people, dead or alive, would you let crash your night?
Nate: My father, who passed away three years ago; he’d always be welcomed. Then I would say either of my kids, full access, always. Isn’t that what being a parent is?
Jeremiah: For alive, the Obamas. For dead, I’d like to have my grandparents for dinner to have them see what we’ve built.
Now playing
TV or a movie?
Nate: TV.
Jeremiah: TV.
What are you watching?
Nate: “Succession,” “Peaky Blinders,” and “Real Housewives.”
Jeremiah: We just finished “Succession,” and we’re probably watching the “Housewives,” to be honest with you.
eBooks or the real deal?
Nate: Real deal, always.
Jeremiah: Real deal.
Currently reading?
Nate: I read two books a week. I’m reading “The Bishop’s Daughter” right now, which is a memoir, and “The Paris Architect: A Novel,” which is a story of an architect who changed existing interiors in Paris during the occupation to hide Jews.
Jeremiah: I’m starting “A Little Life,” which Nate read years ago. He reads two books a week, it’s crazy. I’m the guy who sits in bed and is like, goodnight!
Silence or music?
Nate: Silence.
Jeremiah: Music, always.
Board games, yay or nay?
Nate: Yay, but we have a 3-and-a-half year old, so she wants to play this thing called Zingo all the time. Without the kids, Pictionary.
Jeremiah: I like the idea of a board game, but it’s been so long since I’ve played them.
What’s cooking
Order in or cook for yourself?
Nate: Order in.
Jeremiah: Cooking. We’ve been ordering in a lot lately, but my ideal night in is to cook.
What are you eating?
Nate: We have two modes. We’re either on food delivery, which is no soy, no gluten, very L.A. of us. Or, I’m ordering Korean delivery. I like a noodle-based something.
Jeremiah: Whatever he wants, usually. I love to cook—it’s that whole celebrating and intimacy it creates.
What drink are you pouring?
Nate: Margarita, spicy and skinny.
Jeremiah: Spicy margarita, every day.
What’s for dessert?
Nate: Usually nothing. If anything, I make a shake if I really want something sweet, which is Greek yogurt, a fig, a banana, almond butter, and a lot of ice. It feels like you’re at Dairy Queen, but you’re not.
Jeremiah: I’m not a dessert guy. Sometimes we make chocolate chip cookies.
Late night snack?
Nate: I really try not to.
Jeremiah: I’m not a late-night snacker, but Nate is. Sometimes he makes a shake at 10:30 at night.
Take care
Do you have a self-care ritual?
Nate: Meditation.
Jeremiah: At night, I’m a big fan of aromatherapy and I have the machine. I have a cup of tea every night. I’m very ritualistic, and it’s the same every night.
What do you try to avoid at all costs?
Nate: Home invasion, and also any sort of extra sensory things. I don’t want to sit down to watch a show or film and have a book or phone with me as well. It’s important to just let yourself relax.
Jeremiah: Phone. We’re so available at any moment, so if we’re staying in, I just want the intimacy of connection.
Candles, yay or nay?
Nate: Yay, but Jeremiah is in charge of that. I like things that smell like someone just stepped out of the shower, and he likes our house to smell like it’s on fire. (He does ceremonies around living and setting the scene.)
Jeremiah: Yay! There’s a company called Voyage et Cie that’s based out of California, and the owner makes everything I love. I light the candles in the morning and I reset the house at night.
Face masks, yay or nay?
Nate: Nay, they weird me out. I can’t see!
Jeremiah: Yay, David Colbert does a face mask that I have right here. If I have time I’m going to do it.
Bubble bath, yay or nay?
Nate: Yay! We have a pretty deep English tub in the bathroom. I really aspire to be the person who sits in the tub for 20 minutes, but after five minutes I’m ready to get out.
Jeremiah: Yay! Poppy always wants a bubble bath.
Chores, yay or nay?
Nate: Yay, and I think as a parent that’s really important, too. I’m not the early morning daddy, that’s Jeremiah. I don’t like waking up at 5 a.m. But changing a dirty diaper at night? Sure.
Jeremiah: Yay, we do everything. I mean, with two kids, what chores do we not do?
Ideal bedtime?
Nate: 9:30 p.m.
Jeremiah: I never really go to bed before midnight, but I would love to.
Thanks, Nate and Jeremiah!
