It’s no secret that the competition is stiff when it comes to buying a house these days (not just your number 1 or 2 pick, but anything). With nearly everything “going, going, gone,” fixer-uppers are becoming more popular as demand continues to outweighs inventory. If you’re in the market for a diamond in the rough and are having a hard time getting close to purchasing one, an HGTV duo has the secret to finding fixer-uppers before they even hit the market.

Ken and Anita Corsini, real estate and design experts who host HGTV’s new series “Flipping Showdown,” know a thing or two about fixer-uppers — including how to purchase one. In a recent interview with Apartment Therapy, when asked what advice they would give aspiring flippers, Ken said that it’s all about finding a house below market value. While that might sound impossible, he said it’s achievable as long as you’re willing to do whatever it takes to get in before a house is listed, even if that means knocking on doors.

“The most basic way that still works is to knock on doors. Everybody knows that house that is sitting on the street and is falling into disrepair, maybe it’s vacant, that’s the house that has flipping potential,” Ken explained. “Most people know about the house, been by the neighborhood…there’s still plenty of opportunity out there.”

Ken said that it’s those who take initiative who often get the house off-market and below market value. Not only does that mean buying the house before others, but at a lower cost that means more money can go toward the renovation process itself. It’s not all about getting the fixer-upper — it’s about setting yourself up for post-purchase success, too.

The couple explained that the homes they purchase through this method are often the ones they end up making money on. And even if you want to live in it, that means more money toward making it perfect.

“Flipping Showdown” is available to stream on Discovery+.
