See How a Tiny Entryway Wall Transforms into a Chic Mudroom in Four Steps
If a proper mudroom is on your wish list, you may believe that you need an ample entryway space or loads of extra square footage to make it happen. But there’s a world in which you can create a beautiful, organized landing zone in just a few feet of space — a mini take on a full mudroom that just hits.
You don’t need four separate walls; all you actually need is about two feet of blank wall space (or less!) and a bit of imagination, as one Instagram user just proved with a clever DIY.
“Function can be beautiful,” Taylor from Brick Cottage Revival on Instagram wrote in a recent caption. “We didn’t need more square footage. We needed intention.”
Taylor took a cluttered wall in her home and turned it into a functional mudroom space that the entire family can put to good use. “Beadboard + hooks turned this blank wall into a landing zone that actually works for our family,” she wrote, and the final product is just as beautiful as it is useful.
“Excellent DIY project! The results are beautiful,” one person commented on Taylor’s post. Another said, “You are showing her that anything is possible. She’s a little lucky girl!”
How a Spare Wall Becomes a Functional “Mudroom”
Taylor made her mudroom wall look like its own space by using beadboard and a few pieces of lumber for an upper gallery shelf. You can pick up both of these items at your local hardware store, where they’ll likely cut them down to the exact size you need after purchase (no need to invest in a table saw today!).
You could totally forgo this as well, and just move on to installing hooks; but the addition of these architectural elements gives the wall an upscale vibe. The formality of a classic wainscoting creates a better illusion of a “separate” space where there wasn’t one before.
Then to make the wall functional, Taylor installed hooks to hang coats, bags, and hats on. You can use any hooks that fit your aesthetic, but Taylor opted for simple antique brass options, like these $5 hooks from Lowe’s.
Giving a wall in your home’s entry a formal mudroom treatment will not only make your space function better, but it will also give an unused area a bit more purpose. You’ll feel more organized, and you can finally cross “mudroom” off of your wish list!
