This Trend Will Make Your Bedding Look Outdated in 2024, According to a Designer
When it comes to my bedroom, I think of the bed as its most important feature. That’s because the bed’s the focal point, with all other pieces of furniture arranged around it. That’s also why I like to make it every morning and switch up my bedding on a regular basis. The latter is an easy way to refresh my room without a major overhaul. But sometimes I get stuck in a rut, and I’m not sure how to keep the top of my bed feeling fresh.
If, like me, you’re looking for some inspiration to keep your bedding from looking dated, you’ve come to the right place. I went straight to designer Jessica Davis of Atelier Davis and hardware brand Nest Studio to find out what you can do with your setup to get a more modern look — and turns out, it’s essentially addition by subtraction.
According to Davis, the one bedding trend that seems dated in 2024 is having too many pillows. “The rest of the year and into next year, we will see people making their beds more spare and less pillow-centric,” she says.
I’m a big fan of pillows, so personally this news is hard for me to swallow. But the good thing is, you can still enjoy cushions on your bed — just not too many of them. “Use one long bolster pillow, and then the rest should be your regular bed pillows or maybe some larger bed pillows with shams,” Davis advises. She also suggests forgoing Euro shams, which are often unnecessary on a bed because of all of the sleeping pillows that already take up so much room.
It’s not just pillows that can make your bed look crowded. Excess comforters, blankets, quilts, bed skirts — sometimes there are just too many items on your bed in general, which can cause it to look cluttered. Avoid over-dressing your bed by opting for something substantial in the covers department, like a heavyweight bedspread or an oversized coverlet.
“You can even do a to-the-floor draped bedspread or coverlet instead of your standard duvet with a bed skirt,” Davis says. If you tend to sleep cold and need an extra blanket, maybe try stashing yours in a basket versus putting it at the foot of the bed. Being a little bit more lighthanded with the pieces you style out your bed with will help you simplify your setup and embrace a cleaner appearance. And the unexpected bonus of using fewer things on the top of your bed? Making it in the morning will be easier than ever!
