I won’t claim to know just how much overlap there is in the Venn diagram of hardcore Patti Smith fans and people on the hunt for impressive Brooklyn real estate, but if that sounds like you — welcome to your dream apartment! The Brooklyn home Smith shared with partner Robert Mapplethorpe is available to rent.

Smith and Mapplethorpe moved into the Clinton Hill townhouse in 1967 and paid $80 a month (about $600 today) for the apartment. “We had the entire second floor, with windows facing east and west, but its aggressively seedy condition was out of range of experience,” Smith writes in her memoir, Just Kids. The landlord cut them a deal on the deposit because Mapplethorpe agreed to paint and clean the place.

The apartment is anything but seedy now, so you can mix downtown art scene cred with comfortable living. The three bedroom, three bathroom apartment clocks in at a not insignificant 3,500 square feet. A recent renovation restored the original 1901 pine floors and exposed beams, which along with the high ceilings give the space a bright warmth. The bathrooms and kitchen are thoroughly modern and high end, with Carrera marble and a soaking tub in the bathroom and a Bertazzoni range in the kitchen. There are also two outdoor spaces, a roof deck and back patio.

The apartment is available through Brooklyn Properties for $8,000 a month.
