I Finally Found a Dining Table That Fits Perfectly in My Small Apartment (And It’s Roomy Enough for Hosting)
Space is a precious commodity in Boston, so having room for a dining table in my apartment felt like a win — at least, it did at first. But when I factored in the cost of buying a table, that win felt like a headache waiting to happen. When I moved in three years ago, I sidestepped the expense by inheriting one of my parents’ old dining tables. A quick coat of stain helped it fit my space, and it worked — sort of.
Over time, as I upgraded other areas of my apartment with a new sectional, rugs, and a coffee table, the outdated dining table began to stick out like a sore thumb. It was clear something had to change, but as anyone who’s refurnished a space knows, upgrading doesn’t come cheap. Fortunately, testing furniture for Apartment Therapy comes with its perks. When the Plank + Beam Verso Dining Table and accompanying Solid Wood Upholstered Dining Chairs landed on my radar, I didn’t hesitate. The moment it arrived, I knew my dining space was about to get a serious glow-up — and indeed, it did.

Design Features That Stand Out
I’ve been on the hunt for a great dining table for years, so testing the Verso Dining Table from Plank + Beam was such a pleasant surprise. I wasn’t about to settle for some overpriced table made with particle board — I wanted something that would actually last. Plank + Beam’s table delivered. It’s made entirely from 100% solid pine wood, and it instantly gave me confidence in its quality.
The brand has an interesting backstory, too. It was started over 20 years ago by a husband-and-wife team who got into crafting solid wood furniture together. Their first big hit was a strong, sturdy bed, and that success inspired them to launch Plank + Beam. Even the name is a nod to the materials they use. To this day, the founders are still hands-on, which probably explains why their furniture is so well-made.
Another impressive fact about the brand is that they’re direct-to-consumer, which means there are no middlemen jacking up the prices. You get quality pieces at a much more reasonable price, and honestly, it’s such a steal. I ended up getting both the Verso Dining Table and the Solid Wood Upholstered Dining Chairs, and I’m obsessed. They’ve got a sleek, modern look and a beautiful finish, and they have completely transformed my apartment.
How It Performed
Everything was delivered in three boxes (one for the table and two for the four chairs), and I was able to get it all up my two flights of stairs with the help of one other person. The order arrived relatively quickly — just a few weeks after I placed it — and despite the compact packaging, everything was well-protected during shipping.
Assembling the table was a breeze. I was genuinely surprised at how simple and straightforward the instructions were — and the best part? The necessary tools were included, so there was no need to search for anything extra. Putting together the four solid-wood chairs was a bit more time-consuming — especially because I tackled it solo. But honestly, the most challenging part of the entire process was dealing with the packaging and removing my old table. Building it all was the easier part.
Now that it’s set up, I couldn’t be happier with the results. The table looks like a high-end piece of furniture — the kind you’d expect from a big-name brand with a much heftier price tag. The quality is outstanding, and the accompanying Upholstered Dining Chairs are not only stylish but also incredibly comfortable.
I’ve already hosted friends for takeout and a dinner party with this table, and I absolutely love how social it makes the space. It sits higher than my previous one, and its round shape makes it so easy to engage with everyone around it. Whether we’re chatting or eating, the conversation flows effortlessly. Plus, everyone always raves about how comfortable the chairs are — they’re the perfect complement!
What I Loved
- Solid wood construction and easy assembly: From processing to delivery, it only took a couple of weeks for this dining table (and chairs!) to arrive at my doorstep. The table came in one package, while the four chairs arrived in two separate packages. I was pleasantly surprised by the clear instructions and the high-quality materials. After assembling it, I felt confident sitting at it — it’s a piece of furniture I can see myself enjoying for years.
- Style: The design of this table is modern, yet versatile enough to blend into a more traditional home. In fact, it perfectly rounded out the look of my apartment. I chose the Walnut color, but it’s available in four additional colors if walnut doesn’t suit your space.
Good to Know
It’s probably best to build this table with another person rather than attempting to do it solo like I did. It’s not impossible, but it does take much longer. The dining table itself took me about 30 minutes to assemble, while the four chairs took a collective two hours. In total, this ended up being a two-and-a-half- to three-hour project. I don’t think this is out of the norm, though — I believe it would take me the same amount of time (if not more) with any table. So, it’s a good idea to have another person ready to help you before it arrives.
