At the end of a long day, I’m sure many would agree that sliding into a cozy bed is an enormous relief. But I say many and not everyone because hot sleepers — or those with underwhelming air conditioners and stuffy bedrooms — may disagree. If you fall into that group, you know that bedding can make a huge difference in how easily you fall asleep and how rested you feel the next day.

Personally, I’ve been having some problems with my comforter lately. My apartment is warm enough that I’m leaning toward ditching it altogether and using my lightweight quilt as my primary bed covering instead. If you also need to give your own bed a warm-weather makeover, but you don’t yet have a cozy-yet-breathable quilt, Quince’s Organic Ribbed Cotton Coverlet comes highly recommended by an Apartment Therapy staffer.

What Is the Quince Organic Ribbed Cotton Coverlet?

Quince is a brand that specializes in clothing and home products that look and perform like higher-end brands, but they cost significantly less. That’s why my AT teammates and I have sung its praises for as long as we’ve owned Quince items, from its carry-on suitcase to its bamboo sheets. In many cases, we’ve owned its products for months and years, and in that time we’ve found them to be worth every penny.

This quilt is no exception. Using organic long-staple cotton, the brand wove together two layers to create this quilt’s gorgeous textured look. It’s also been given a special pre-wash treatment so it feels soft to the touch right away. As with all cotton bedding, the more you wash it the softer it’ll get. It’s safe to put in the washing machine and dryer, so upkeep isn’t a problem.

Because it’s free of synthetic materials, the quilt is cool enough for all seasons, whether it serves as a sole covering or a layer in your bedscape once the temperature dips. Because it’s OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified, you can rest easy knowing that it’s free of chemicals and pesticides. That and the fact that it’s entirely cotton means that it’s ideal for those with sensitive skin.

Why We Love the Organic Ribbed Cotton Coverlet

Rachelle, AT’s senior product manager of special projects, has held onto this quilt since last spring, when she tested it out for our Best List series. After doubling it up with her comforter during the cooler months, she just started using it on its own again. “It’s heavy enough to provide some warmth, but not too much like a comforter,” she says.

Although it’s certainly a substantial quilt, Rachelle also gave it a perfect rating for breathability. She ranked it just as highly for durability. Aside from a little bit of shedding after the initial wash, it looks as good as it did when it was brand-new. And its look, of course, is one of the coverlet’s best features.

“The look and feel is very clean and modern and elevates my bed,” Rachelle explains. She went with the Sand color — “a perfect neutral shade that isn’t the standard white or beige” — but it also comes in Terracotta, Ivory, White, Light Grey, and Olive.

Nearly 300 shoppers share Rachelle’s opinion that this quilt is next-level. “I’m in menopause and have temperature regulation issues, and this blanket has been perfection,” says one review. “Not too hot and not too cold … but JUST PERFECT.” Another swears it’s “one of the best blankets [they] have ever purchased.”

You can follow in the footsteps of another shopper, who uses it as an alternative to a top sheet, but in my opinion this quilt deserves to be shown off. It’s time to shelve your comforter until fall and give your bed a summer refresh — and this one is guaranteed to keep you cozy and cool and take your bedroom’s appearance up a notch.
