These Sustainable Candle Jars Become Plant Pots for the Seed-Infused Paper Lids—Just Add Dirt
One burdensome aspect of burning candles is deciding what to do with the used glass candle jars, many of which are tossed into landfills to contribute to environmental pollution. But one Kickstarter has a solution to ensure that candles continue enhancing the space they’re in, even after they’ve burned out. Pass it On plantable candles is an inventive, sustainable home decor option that’s designed to make a room smell delightful while beautifying it at the same time.
Inspired by the founder’s encounter with coral bleaching during a trip to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, the plantable candles are made with 100 percent soy wax and is free of dyes, parabens, phthalates and paraffin. The packaging boxes are made of corrugated cardboard that can be recycled or reused. The pots are also 100 percent biodegradable.
In the event that you aren’t quite prepared to return the pots to nature, you can reuse them to grow a plant. When the candle finishes, simply fill the pot with soil, shred the biodegradable candle lid label—made using wildflower seed-infused paper—and plant the pieces in the pot, add water and sunlight, and wait for what was once the beautiful glow of a burning wick to be replaced by a wildflower.
Each candle scent is inspired by four international locations that have declined at the hands of climate change. “Pass It On candles pay tribute to iconic travel destinations that are endangered due to climate change,” the creators write. “The scents were created to remind us of these endangered destinations with the hope to encourage the current generation to do their part in protecting our environment.”
In alignment with the company’s sustainable model, a percentage of the proceeds from each candle purchase will go towards the Eden Reforestation Projects to plant 10 trees in West Bali, Indonesia.
