There are few things more important than a good night’s sleep, and that’s especially true for kids, who need that time for their development. According to the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, “Kids who regularly get an adequate amount of sleep have improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, and overall mental and physical health. Not getting enough sleep can lead to high blood pressure, obesity and even depression.”

That’s why choosing the right mattress for your kids is so important. I have two children, 4 and 10, and they need about 10-13 and 9-12 hours of sleep each night, respectively. That’s almost half the day, so it’s essential that their beds, pillows, and mattresses provide the support and comfort they need for a full night of restful slumber. For that reason, I chose to invest in the Helix Kids mattress for my four-year-old. Here’s how it’s going for us so far.

Why I Chose It

After doing an eye-crossing amount of research, I decided to purchase a Helix Kids mattress. Its top ranking from The Sleep Foundation felt especially reassuring, as did high marks from Parents magazine.

But the number one reason why I chose the Helix Kids mattress was the flippability factor — the mattress is designed to be flipped when a child transitions from needing a mattress with firm support to wanting a mattress with cushiony comfort.

According to the Sleep Foundation, that occurs somewhere around 7 years old. I was also pleased with the odor-blocking cover, though we do use a mattress protector as well, just to be on the safe side.

What I Like About It

We’ve been using our Helix kids mattress for one full month, and it’s been great so far. My four year old is using the firmer side of the mattress for now, and there have been no complaints. When I read her a story before bed, the mattress feels firm but not too hard. It’s perfectly cozy for reading, cuddling, and just hanging out.

My daughter is also a hot sleeper, often waking up soaked in sweat. This mattress seems to keep her relatively cool, which is especially nice on these hot summer nights.

What I Don’t Like About It

True that Helix Kids falls on the pricier side, but with a 100 night sleep trial and a 10 year warranty, that cost feels like a reasonable investment for us. Some reviewers online had issues with the shipping times taking longer than what was estimated, but we weren’t in a rush for our mattress, so we didn’t notice any particular shipping delays.

What Do Other Buyers Say?

Out of 151 reviews on the Helix website, this bed has a 4.9 out of 5 star rating. I always go right to the low score reviews to see what the issues were, and in this case, they were mostly about shipping delays. In one case, a reviewer said the mattress was too heavy. Overwhelmingly, the mattress received 5-star reviews

On the reviews on the Helix website, verified buyer Ian Z. said, “Getting my son his own Helix Bed was a very good decision. I purchased a Helix bed for my wife and I about a year ago, and we love it. My son also loves it and would comment about how comfortable it was; so we got one for him and he loves it.”

Would I Buy the Helix Kids Mattress Again?

At this point, yes, I would buy the Helix Kids mattress again and would recommend it to friends. In addition to having a great product, Helix also offered good customer service, and the box the mattress came in was super cute, with a design my daughter could color in while the mattress was being set up, and when you invest hundreds of dollars in a mattress, those little details really add up.
