Earlier this week, we shared a simple trick to make a dark room brighter, but today we're talking to those who want their spaces darker. Whether you're a sensitive sleeper and can't handle even the slightest bit of light from a nearby street lamp, or you work the nightshift and can only catch those Zzz during the sunniest part of the day, this one relatively affordable decor addition just might up your sleep quality.

What am I referencing exactly? French return curtain rods. You know how traditional drapery hardware leaves a gap on the side of your window that's several inches wide? French return curtain rods ensure that your panels wrap completely around to meet the wall, leaving no opening for light to stream through. They tend to be a bit less decorative than a rod with finials, but that also means they are incredibly affordable.

So if you need a room dark as pitch to sleep (or need additional privacy because you live on a busy street), take a look at some of our favorite affordable options on the market right now.

Umbra Twilight Double Curtain Rod Set at Amazon, Starting at $35

A double rod set is perfect for those who prefer the layered curtain look (sheers are also a great way to let light in but maintain a level of privacy).

Versailles Privacy Wraparound Rod Set, 48/86" Brushed Nickel at Houzz, $45

This brushed nickel rod set has a nice Euro cafe-meets-industrial-loft vibe to them. Add panels on hooked rings to easily slide them open and closed.

Umbra Twilight Curtain Rod at Hayneedle, Starting at $25

Umbra makes some nice quality and well-priced drapery hardware. This is the single curtain version of the first option above.

Threshold French Pipe Curtain Rod at Target, Starting at $26

The pipe curtain rod look was a huge hit a few years back (also super easy to DIY!), but if you're not so handy, this rod from Target will do the trick if you're more in to the industrial aesthetic.

Room Darkening Invisible Rod Brass Curtain Rod at Crate & Barrel, $50

A pop of silky brass via curtain hardware is a great way to add some drama and glam to a modern space.

PB Essential Drape Rod at Pottery Barn, Starting at $39

Also available in pewter (and up to 120" long), the cast iron finish on this rod feels extra special.

Privacy Wraparound Curtain Rod at Improvements, Starting at $40

A subtle antique brass is less glam and more classic. Plus, it doesn't hurt that this rod is rated 4.5 stars on its website reviews (and doesn't have visible hanging hardware for a super sleek look).

Loft by Umbra Curtain Rod in Bronze at Target, Starting at $17

The price point on this rod is frankly just hard to beat.

French Return Drapery Hardware at Ballard Designs, Starting at $45

Thin and delicately designed, this drapery rod won't detract any attention from your curtains.

Meriville 1-Inch Diameter Wraparound Blackout Curtain Rod at Amazon, Starting at $30

I personally prefer my curtain hardware to be at least 1-inch thick; it's that Goldilocks not-too-thick-not-too-thin diameter that looks just right. (I would pair it with 1.25"-1.5" rings, like these.)

Effie Return Single Curtain Rod at Wayfair, $48

If you have vertical blinds over your windows or doors, you'll need a rod that protrudes a bit more to clear the blind attachment, like this one from Wayfair.

BlockAide Bay Window Curtain Rod System at Bed Bath & Beyond, Starting at $45

And finally, if you have a bay window and looking for total room darkness, here's an option for you, too.
