I’ve tested more than a dozen sleeper sofas in furniture stores over the past couple of years, so you can trust me when I say that they’re not all created equal. Whenever I see one on a showroom floor, I prepare myself to break a sweat trying to pull out the mattress underneath its cushions; sometimes I have to enlist the help of a store employee to get it open because it’s so heavy. So when I come upon a sleeper that’s easy to unfold, I consider it a win.

That was the case recently when I visited Sabai Design’s Williamsburg showroom. I was there to look at the brand’s new sleeper line, which is called the Eclipse collection. I not only got to sit on the fluffy oversized chair and sofa, but the brand’s co-founder, Phantila Phataraprasit, also gave me a demo of the chair. I was already a fan of the brand, but this visit only deepened my appreciation for its stylish living room seating.

What Is the Eclipse Collection?

The new collection includes a sleeper sofa and chair, both of which feature an oversized silhouette and fun upholstery color options. The sofa measures 70 inches long, so it’s not too wide for a small apartment. It’s 32.5 inches tall, which is pretty standard, and 44 inches deep. When I sat all the way back on it, I found that my feet didn’t quite touch the floor. I’m 5’6”, so even for someone of average height there’s plenty of space to recline and spread out.

The Eclipse chair has the same depth of 44 inches. At 48 inches long, it’s more of a chair-and-a-half or lounger than your standard armchair. Both the chair and sofa have FSC-certified plywood frames and high-resiliency foam cushions. Rubberized coconut fiber also adds durability and helps promote breathability to the overall designs. Additionally, each product is available in hemp and recycled velvet upholstery fabrics.

Phataraprasit explained to me that although the brand decided to offer each piece in standard fabric colors like Cashew velvet and Natural hemp, bolder hues were also introduced. So you can shop your new sleeper in a light blue color with amber contrast piping, or play around with an indigo velvet to add some excitement to your living space. She noted that Sabai customers have wanted sleeper seating for a while, so the new collection fulfills that desire.

Why You’ll Love the Eclipse Collection

Even before I saw the Eclipse chair folded out, I fell in love with its soft-but-supportive seat. The sofa had the same bouncy-but-cloud-like feel, which was a pleasant surprise. Oftentimes the sleepers I test have firm seats, so I can’t imagine sitting on them for fun or just to relax. But with these deep models I could lounge all day. The sofa in particular is wide and spacious like a daybed. You could use it as your main living room seating or place it in a spare room, like the home office, for overnight guests.

If you already have a sofa and aren’t in the market for another one, the Eclipse chair would make a solid addition to your favorite reading corner. I can just imagine curling up on it with a blanket and my laptop and spending hours browsing the internet or streaming a show. Phataraprasit showed me how easy it is to unfold; she removed the back cushion before pulling on a seat cushion tab and unfolding the seat outward. From there, all you have to do is replace the back cushion and add your bedding. So simple!

Whether you need a crash pad for overnight guests or a comfy place to do movie nights with friends that isn’t your bed, the Eclipse collection is perfect for the job and totally hassle-free. You have the option to add a lumbar cushion to both the sofa and chair, but each one is also comfortable on its own. The color options are cool, too — that Thistle/Amber hemp combo is dynamite!
