Lara, Florent, and Oscar + baby boy on the way
Paris, France
970 square feet
Owned 7 years, 4 years since both apartments merged
Nestled in the Boulogne-Billancourt neighborhood just outside of Paris, Lara and her husband Florent have created a bright and airy home that flows from space to space. However, this home was a labor of love when Lara chose to purchase a small studio apartment based on its garden, eventually expanding out as her life and family began to grow.
Lara and Florent settled into the small studio apartment about seven years ago when they fell in love with a private garden space among their urban Parisian neighborhood. As the years went on and their need for space grew, they purchased the apartment next door to merge the two apartments to create one cohesive space for their family. To create such a tranquil flow throughout the home, Lara has incorporated a consistently neutral palette throughout each room, creating a serene and grounded feel to the space. Lara balances out her neutral and modern design with touches of vintage and sentimental items, giving this once divided space a united and timeless feel.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Neutral, simple, light and airy, modern with touches of vintage/older furniture.
Inspiration: A little Scandinavian, a little boho, a little French, all twisted in a modern, timeless way.
Favorite Element: Our china cabinet; it’s really quite simple but I love to see all my white dishes on display and the functionality of just leaving it open all the time to see and grab whatever you need quickly while cooking or setting the table.
Biggest Challenge: Probably combining everyday life with a clean aesthetic home look, essential to me as I work from home and can’t start working if there is mess around me… so I try to find a storage solution for each kind of personal belongings that may lay around (hence so many baskets around our home) and I taught my son from very little on to tidy up after he has finished playing. I always do the dishes after meals so they don’t pile up and never leave them undone in the evening so I find a clean kitchen in the morning. And I must admit I’m always tidying up bits and pieces throughout the day.
Proudest DIY: Our kitchen island! My mom and I worked around what was available from IKEA to design and build it. It makes such a difference to the entire open floor space. It ties everything together and is a super functional piece: We cook on it, gather around it with friends and family for a glass of wine while cooking, I sometimes work on it, etc.
Biggest Indulgence: Ha! That one is still on my wish list but I’m sure it won’t be that long until I get it. Even though I know it’s not the comfiest chair I’m obsessed with Carl Hansen’s Wishbone chair in soaped oak. It has such gorgeous lines and would look stunning in our home for sure! Other than that I think all our choices have been thought through and made consciously so even if there were some expensive buys they have always been for a good reason. Our Gervasoni Ghost sofa has been a big expense, for example, but it is in use daily and the washable slipcovers make it so worth the splurge!
Best Advice: Don’t try and go after a specific home trend when building or decorating. Trends go out of fashion. Rather go after your heart, the colors and the pieces of furniture or art that truly speak to you. It will make your house your home and your style truly unique.
What’s your best home secret? Washable sofa covers/curtains/fabrics in general; baskets to store kids toys or other home accessories you want to hide; glass containers to store your groceries so you can display them on open shelves and don’t have to use up too much storage space.
