Jennifer is one half of the Minneapolis-based, custom hand-painted and printed wallpaper and furnishings company, She She. (Kate Worum is the other half of She She, and we toured her home, too!) An architect by trade, Jennifer spends most of her time being creative. In fact, her Minneapolis home is just bursting with creativity and is a delight to explore. And while we don’t all have our very own custom hand-painted wallpaper business, we can all learn a thing or two from Jennifer’s one-of-a-kind home.

Almost by accident, Jennifer and her friend, illustrator Kate Worum, created She She as the two found an unexpected way to process recent major life events. Before they knew it, their little idea bloomed into something huge. From entire walls, to framed art adorning the walls, She She’s fingerprints are all over Jennifer’s home.

But the creativity oozing from Jennifer’s home doesn’t stop with She She. As a designer, Jennifer knows what she’s doing and isn’t afraid to take chances. From bright and bold furniture to an unexpected remodel of the upstairs level, Jennifer’s home has something for everyone to get excited about.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: I like the permanent items to stay as classic and original as possible then I add my personality and color with art and furnishings that are easily changed over time.

Inspiration: When I initially chose the permanent finishes I wanted the house to have a blank canvas art gallery feel while keeping everything original in the house. So, I painted the walls white and pickled the original floors to make the house as open and modern as possible and re-finished the original woodwork in a slightly darker color than the existing orange stain.

Favorite Element: I love the flow of my little bungalow—it almost feels like an open floor plan even though I haven’t touched the layout at all. The individual rooms are that perfect size where they never feel too small, but they’re just small enough where when you’re sitting in them you get that feeling of comfort like they’re giving you a hug.

Biggest Challenge: I bought the house without ever being in it or even walking around it. I lived down the street at the time so I walked my dogs past it every day and based on the looks of it, I knew that it was going to be for sale sometime soon. I was on a work trip in Vancouver and the house popped on the market and there were already a bunch of offers on it… so I naturally responded by writing an offer a few minutes later over-asking and with no inspection… I’m not competitive at all.

I ended up getting the house and once I was home I found out that the windows were full of maggots and the ceilings in fact didn’t have red wallpaper, they were in fact infested with box elder bugs. I moved on from these items, but when someone tried to turn on the water to the house and it didn’t work, I found out that the water line to the street was broken… it’s a boiler system so I had no water or heat and it’s apparently against the law to buy a house without those two items, so I had to turn the shed I was buying into a “house” before I even owned it. So, I decided to still buy the house and handled it—then, a week before closing someone broke into the house and stole all the copper out of it—so, that all had to get replaced before I could close again. I love this house, but it’s always had a dramatic personality.

What Friends Say: They love it, but most of them would love it more if I got a TV and a comfier couch.

Proudest DIY: I mean, the whole entire house.

Biggest Indulgence: Definitely the backyard. Some of my best friends own Walkabout Outdoor and they helped me turn what was essentially a pile of bricks, covered in trash, covered in a lot’s worth of wild raspberry bushes, into my own little oasis perfect for entertaining.

Best Advice: Take your time. I love my house because it tells the story of my life and travels over the last seven years—if you go out and buy all of your furniture at once, it shows.

Dream Sources: My next big project is finishing my basement; I designed it four years ago and I think I’m about ready for another project. I have every intention of finally investing in my Mah Jong sofa to cuddle on and watch movies and I am pretty close to having a temper tantrum every time this feather palm tree floor lamp comes up in my searches because it is an absolute necessity in my newly re-done home office.
