Do you ever get annoyed that some of the trendiest sofa styles have the most uncomfortably low backs? Yes, a leather chesterfield looks super trendy and stylish, but sit on one for too long and you’ll realize it causes some gnarly neck pain. If you’ve ever wondered why sofas like these don’t come with a headrest, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that this product already exists.

A sofa headrest is exactly what it sounds like — a small additional pillow-like attachment that fits into the top of your couch so you can keep your neck in a comfortable, neutral position. I recently discovered that Castlery offers sofa headrests that pair with their Madison, Owen, and Hamilton collections, and they’re total game-changers.

The headrests attach to the back of the couch with metal wires, which are then covered up by the back couch cushion. It comes in the same fabrics and colors as their sofa lines, so everything looks perfectly matched, and starts at just $139 — a small price to pay to keep your neck free of pain. It’s also a great way to make your sofa stand out in style, and if you want to be a bit eclectic, you can get the headrest in a different color or fabric to create a gorgeous accent to your sofa.

There are some things you need to look out for, however — one reviewer says, “It is a little firm so I feel it needs to be broken-in a bit,” but also points out, “I’m actually really glad we got it.” It might also squish the top of your sofa cushion a bit, so be prepared to do some extra fluffing!

If you’re looking for a more affordable option in terms of both couch and headrest, IKEA has a headrest for its FINNALA line of couches, which comes in a variety of neutrals as well as one colorway. This one has slightly more mixed reviews, with one customer saying, “Perfect head support for lounging on the couch or loveseat.” Another, however, calls them an “ergonomic disaster.”

The end result may depend on your own height and structure, and if all else fails you can always return them and buy some throw pillows for support instead. Either way, sofa headrests are definitely an interesting innovation, and a great way to add an accent color to your couch as well.
