Nothing Screams “Soft Architecture” Like Cloud-Inspired Furniture (Literally Looks Like a Dream!)
It’s probably the Virgo in me, but I love a theme. I love an assignment — invite me to a costume party, and it’s guaranteed that I’ll show up in character. But one place I love seeing a motif most is in a home; it’s a statement that doesn’t whisper but screams that the person who lives there is passionate about a particular thing, decade, or style.
When I came across Tynan Sinks’ apartment in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, I was blown away by the commitment to the theme: clouds. And although Tynan decorated the home four years ago, it reminded me of a trend that’s popular right now: “soft architecture.” What could be more emblematic of coziness and softness than a cloud?
Why Cloud Furniture Works for “Soft Architecture”
“Soft architecture” is all about ditching rigidity in home furnishings. “In the pursuit of all things cozy — maybe the most pervasive interior design goal of this entire decade, second only to personalization — homes are literally losing their hard edges,” says Danielle Blundell, Apartment Therapy’s executive director of home.
Clouds, objects with zero hard lines, are the epitome of gentleness, and they promote relaxation and tranquility. Tynan, at the time of the House Tour, described his style as “plush, fluffy, pastel, clean, retro, and futuristic, in the way that The Jetsons are futuristic.” The first two descriptors are perfect fits for “soft architecture,” and his furniture selections show exactly how to bring that softness into a home.

When it comes to cloud-inspired furniture, Tynan nailed the theme. His two favorite items are the DIY cloud light fixture above his bed, and the curvy Wayfair loveseat.
“They’re both kind of the thesis of the place, do you know what I mean?” Tynan explained of his two favorite items. “The cloud couch is just … perfect. It’s cartoony and curvy and soft and just totally unreal.”
Another item that screams “soft architecture” is the bed frame from Soft Bed Designs (it’s literally in the name!). This bed has no hard edges, and it’s made to be über-plush with a 3.5-inch foam-filled frame. To keep the curves going, Tynan incorporated an arched white table from TOV Furniture in his entryway. The rounded shape is another easy way to bring that softness into a space.
While I love the theme of Tynan’s apartment, I understand if you’re not ready to jump all in. Instead, the few products above bring in the “soft architecture” aesthetic without requiring a full cloud-themed makeover. Tynan drew inspiration from many places, but he wanted his home to feel like “a little gay space station in the clouds,” and he achieved that with white walls and carefully curated furniture.
