I Put 4 Spice Racks on My Fridge, and It’s the Best Small-Kitchen Storage Hack

In my teeny New York City apartment, figuring out how to extract every square inch of space sometimes feels like performing a magic trick. I adore cooking and baking, but making space for all of the ingredients and gadgets can be quite the feat. Through trial and error, I’ve found that using vertical space helps enormously, as it clears the counters and takes advantage of otherwise wasted square footage. 

One area that was underused in my kitchen was the exterior of the fridge, so I recently picked up a four-pack of SONGMICS Magnetic Bamboo Shelves for less than $20 — and I can’t believe how much of a difference it made instantly in our space.

I used three racks on one side of the fridge as extra shelving for everyday items I want easy access to, like vitamins, tea, and nutritional add-ins like creatine, fiber, and electrolytes. I put the fourth on the other side that’s adjacent to the stove, where I store items I reach for all the time when cooking, like salt, pepper, olive oil, and a set of measuring cups.

You could also use the racks for spices, snacks, spreads, protein bars, condiments, or even as a catch-all for mail and keys.

I was worried the magnet wouldn’t be strong enough to hold items without slipping, but they don’t budge at all (the smaller rack holds up to 8.8 pounds, and the larger one holds up to 10 pounds). I also love that they have a modern look that’s simple but still feels intentional — the bamboo detailing is a nice touch, and the metal comes in both black and a creamy white. 

I love these magnetic spice racks so much that I’m tempted to get another pack just to clear up more space in my kitchen cabinets and utilize more of the vertical area on the fridge. I also want to use these magnetic shelves in the laundry room, on dry erase boards, or in a utility closet or garage for cleaning supplies and tools. Clearly, opportunities abound!
