Now that summer is here, it’s time to enjoy the warm weather outdoors (extreme humidity permitting). When inspiration hits to go on a hike or a picnic with friends, you don’t want to be running around your home looking for bags, blankets, and sunscreen. That’s why I like to keep a bin stocked with my summer must-haves near my door in a coat closet. Doing so reduces the friction of getting outside and enjoying those long easy-going days that stretch into the night.

My summer bin usually has all the essentials I need for the season: sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a picnic blanket, swim towels, a beach tote, and a day-hike backpack. You can add more items for your other summertime interests, such as a running vest, extra water bottles, or a camp chair if you like to ride your bike on greenways, trail run by the river, or go camping.

I chose this cheap Room Essentials Clear Storage Box with Lid for my bin because I knew I wanted to maximize space to fit bigger items like a camp chair and hiking backpack in it. It’s close to the size of my closet’s floor space, which works well because I knew I wouldn’t be taking the bin out of the closet very often. A clear bin makes finding that crumpled tote bag that wiggled its way to the bottom easy, without having to dump everything out. Plus, this one is just $7.50, a deal for how much storage it provides.

If you don’t have a closet by your door, consider storing your summer bin in an entryway bench or in the trunk of your car, but keep it tucked away so it doesn’t cause visual clutter.

If you’re thinking about storing your bin in a car, a solid-colored option with a lid will keep your gear out of sight. My favorite is this heavy-duty storage tote because it’s super durable and stacks nicely. A lid can also be helpful if the bin is exposed to the elements or if you’re a packing maximalist and would rather carry the whole bin out on your adventures.

Before buying a nice new plastic bin, look around your home and see if you own a suitable one already or check your local thrift stores. If your chosen bin is a bit dusty or dirty, give it a quick rinse and let it dry in the sun before loading it up with goodies.
