Terrain Opened a Fourth Store, and It Has Its Own Orchard and Plants Galore
Just yesterday Terrain, an immersive retail garden center meets restaurant and private event space, opened its fourth and most ambitious stand-alone store to date in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, in partnership with Delaware Valley University (DVU). Building on Terrain’s unique point of view as a store that merges outdoor living with community nurturing, this new location will offer all the things Terrain is known for — its nursery of plants, indoor/outdoor decor, design services, workshops, and dining — set against a pastoral backdrop that includes an orchard for pick your own apples, peaches, and pumpkins, depending on the season.
“Just like in nature, we encourage customers to slow down, discover, learn from their surroundings, while also cultivating connections,” says Beth Smith, the managing director of Terrain. “Many of our existing stores have become hubs in their communities because we offer a variety of ways to engage and enjoy the brand. We see customers come in, grab a coffee, walk through the shop, sit down for a meal — many times customers visiting several times over the course of a day.”
Terrain’s partnership at the Doylestown location with DVU is more than just lip service, too. Interns from the school will be on site, the café and event space menus will feature ingredients grown by the school’s farms, and the university also has a farm stand on site for selling its crops.
As far as store visuals go, you can expect the typical inspirational-meets-aspirational fodder that Terrain and the URBN family of brands is known for. In this particular location, the Terrain team created a striking “everblooming tree” display, as shown below. “We had found a tree that had died, repurposed it, and installed it in the store to give it a new life by adding hundreds of silk peach blossoms to the branches in an incredibly realistic way to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art that will be in bloom year-round,” says Greg Lehmkuhl, creative director of Terrain. “For us, this is a great example of how to bring the beauty of nature indoors. With just a few materials, you can create your own everblooming tree for your home.”
In addition to live plants and seasonal fruits and veggies, shoppers can expect to find large and small decor. A few standout budget finds range from Earth Fired Clay Plant Containers, which start at just $8, to Oaxacan Floral Taper Candles, which start at just $28. Outdoor lighting solutions are abundant at this location of Terrain and on the brand’s website, too. “Ambient overhead string lighting has always been popular, and this trend is set to continue into 2023 with a focus on softer, warm-toned lights that create a cozy atmosphere,” says Lehmkuhl. “A fresh take on this trend, and what we have seen emerging, is dimmable table lighting giving you the option to add extra light where you need it without overpowering the space.”
The store is now open for business on weekdays and weekends, and you can expect festivals, workshops, and more tied into each season to unfold on the grounds. If you can’t make it to Doylestown — or any of the other brick-and-mortar locations to shop in person — Terrain’s website is always open.
