Peppermints are a holiday season staple, but instead of just pouring a handful into candy dishes this year, there’s another ingenious way to display them. One TikToker transformed these sweet treats into — drumroll, please — adorable DIY Christmas ornaments.

A video posted by @mrs.claus.kitchen, a festive account dedicated to holiday baking, shows how you can use cookie cutters to mold peppermint candies into Christmas-themed shapes like stockings, stars, snowflakes, and more. These not only double as chic candy cane alternatives to hang on your tree, but they also make adorable gift toppers, placeholders, and cake decorations. You could even string a few together to create a festive, minty fresh garland.

“All you need is peppermint hard candies, metal cookie cutters, a wooden skewer stick, and some string,” the original poster captioned the video.

To make your own DIY peppermint ornaments, start by setting your oven to 350°F. Place any cookie cutters you want to use on a parchment-lined baking sheet and fill each mold with as many round peppermints as can fit (and don’t worry about gaps; the candies will expand in the oven). For best results, make sure that the mints are completely flat.

Next, let these bake for seven to eight minutes. “Watch closely so it doesn’t burn,” adds the original poster in the caption. After you take them out and while they’re still warm (but not hot), you can use a skewer to pierce a hole in the top of each for a piece of ribbon or string. Then, carefully punch the candied shapes out of the cookie cutters using your fingers and light pressure, tie them off, and you’ve got yourself the most adorable DIY ornament

If you don’t already have festive cookie cutters, you can buy them individually or in sets from Amazon or your local craft store for just a few dollars. The whole project takes hardly any time at all, too, making it the perfect family-friendly holiday activity. Who knows — it might even become a new tradition!
