Trader Joe’s Is Selling a “Beautiful” $13 Plant Find That Shoppers Are Buying in Bulk
The only thing better than learning that a houseplant is easy to care for is that it’s also pet-friendly. And Trader Joe’s has a plant for sale right now that’s all of the above and just under $13. Plus, they’re already lush enough to fill in space on that sparse shelf or side table.
“Added a calathea to our plant family,” Christy from the Trader Joe’s and Target Finds Instagram account wrote in a recent caption, first posted on July 15. “This one is non-toxic to pets, so it’s perfect for our house. Trader Joe’s always has the best plants at the best prices.”
“I’ve had one of these for about a year and they’re so easy!” one person commented on Christy’s post. “I admittedly forget to water it for a while and it always survives!”
Another person added, “So beautiful! We are looking for something like this to add to our living room. It’s a bonus that it’s non-toxic.”
Calathea plants are tropical plants native to the Americas and actually move throughout the day depending on how much sun it needs. The leaves often “drop” during the day to receive more sunlight.
They don’t require that much water, which is good for forgetful plant parents like the commenter above. Calathea plants should be watered whenever the top inch or so of their soil is dry, and make sure you plant your Calathea in a pot with plenty of drainage holes to reduce the risk of root rot.
Keep your Calathea in an area that receives bright to medium indirect sunlight. They can survive in low-light conditions, but the vibrancy of their leaves may dull over time if they don’t receive enough light.
And if your cat or dog (or even your kid!) happens to nibble on its leaves, no problem. The Calathea plant is completely nontoxic. Phew!
You should also keep your calathea in your bedroom because, as Debbie Neese, a horticulture expert at Lively Root, previously told Apartment Therapy, the plant “signals that it’s time for bed as it folds its leaves upward,” which “shows off under the pinstriped leaf to reveal a purple underside, which is like having two plants in one.”
Pick up a Calathea plant from your nearest Trader Joe’s while they’re available and add this easy-to-care-for plant to your collection ASAP.
