You don’t need to walk into the produce section of Trader Joe’s to stumble upon a pineapple right now. The grocery store is currently selling Pineapple Bromeliad plants in the garden center and these houseplants are one of the coolest Trader Joe’s has sold yet.

Pineapple Bromeliad is native to South America and is used to getting plenty of sunlight, so place these plants in a sunny window or in a spot that gets indirect sunlight all day long.

Each plant will grow one pineapple, but the plant itself will produce pups, which will each grow yet another pineapple on their own if propagated and repotted.

This pineapple variety won’t likely grow fruit that reaches full, edible size. In fact, the immature fruit can even be toxic and could cause gastrointestinal issues or throat irritation if eaten. So, for now, keep it on the table as a conversation starter rather than an appetizer.

Caring for these pineapple plants couldn’t be easier. Place them in a sunny spot and only water them when their soil is completely dry. Overwatering could cause heart rot or attract pests, so the dryer the soil the better.

Trader Joe’s locations across the country are selling these Pineapple Bromeliad plants for $15.99, so snatch one up now to add to your indoor garden. It may just become the most interesting plant you bring home.
