The Christmas Decor Hack You Should Steal Right Now (Yes, in January!)
It’s the end of January, which means a new holiday is around the corner: Valentine’s Day! Come February 1, I will be incorporating as much heart decor as possible into my living space. And so I was thrilled to learn about the decor trend of repurposing a certain viral DIY holiday decoration — the Christmas bow cabinet hack — to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
If anyone needs a recap on the viral bow trend from Christmastime, people were wrapping their kitchen cabinets in festive holiday ribbons so the cabinets themselves looked like decked-out gift boxes. This is such a fun way to spice up your kitchen space, which is an often overlooked room in terms of holiday decor.
In case you missed the Christmas-bow boat, this really cute Valentine’s Day spin would look perfect in your kitchen this February.
Kelly Oester (@kelly.oester) posted a Reel showing off how she decorated her kitchen cabinets using the same technique, but with heart-adorned ribbons. Wearing an adorable pink heart sweater, Oester shows herself step-by-step wrapping the cabinets, making it easy to follow along.
The only things you’ll need for this DIY project are the ribbon of your choice — you can find so many festive options at Michaels, like this sparkly heart ribbon for $6.99 for 10 yards — and something like tape to secure the ribbon with on the inside of your cabinets (and that you feel comfortable using on your surfaces).
To begin, wrap each cabinet with the ribbon, crossing the ribbons over one another to look like a present. Make sure the pieces of ribbon are long enough to wrap over to the inside of the cabinet and secure down. Then, tie a bow around the crossed pieces of ribbon, and voila! Your cabinets are festively adorned with heart-speckled ribbons.
This trend is so simple and affordable, yet it really adds a ton of charm to your living space. You could even take it one step further by hanging a festive heart garland under your cabinets, like this one for $8.99. But be warned: You won’t want to take this decor down post-Valentine’s Day. (Petition to make heart decor a year-round situation!)
