Here’s the Most Beautiful Way to Grow Your Own Avocado Plant
For anyone who failed miserably at the grade-school experiment of growing a potato plant in a jar, there’s now a fancy alternative that will help you redeem yourself. It’s called the Avocado Vase, and it’s a simple way to grow an avocado tree while watching it sprout from a seed.
Created by London-based Ilex Studio, the glass vase (£35, about $43) has an hourglass shape that’s design to keep the seed dry in the upper section, allowing the roots to expand into the water, which the bottom portion holds. To enhance the observation of the tree’s growth process, the glass is designed to magnify, allowing the user to have a closer look.
“We have refined the traditional method of growing, skipping the toothpicks, and utilizing the opening to cradle the seed keeping it dry as it sprouts and encouraging the roots to flourish freely,” founder and designer Ed Spurr says. “The sinuously shaped vase magnifies the roots as they prosper; creating a perfect focal point to witness the plant as it develops.”
The vase comes with a 36-page reference book to walk users through the tree-growing process, which should serve as an informative to guide for anyone who’s new to being a plant parent. It contains helpful details on seed germination, pruning, re-potting and more. The booklet also contains “historical references and artistic inspirations,” and is also printed on recycled cards, sticking to Ilex’s mission to improve the environment for future generations.
Ilex considers the Avocado Vase as “ideal for plant lovers, gardeners, nature explorers, design enthusiasts, inquisitive children and everyone who wishes to experience the joy of nature and a unique connection to our environment.” However, in the extremely rare case that avocados aren’t your thing, Ilex also has an Acorn Vase (£22, about $27) that bears the same spherical, magnified design.
