Want to Escape to the Wilderness? This Job Comes With a Colorado Cabin
Are you ready to just run away from it all? Willing to trade your office job for some rugged, outdoor labor? The US Forest Service may have an opportunity for you, but you have to act fast the deadline is quickly approaching.
The San Juan National Forest in Colorado is looking for someone to take over two of their remote properties. It reads something like a hermit, meets in-keeper, meets homesteader. You will be tasked with upkeep of the cabins, hosting “show me trips”, and providing rental services for the cabins. Any leftover profits from the rentals go straight to your (probably fleece lined) pockets. Think of it as sort of a gritty Airbnb situation.
Applications are due on October 27th and they’re fairly extensive. Applicants must turn in a full business proposal, and they’re responsible for all the unsexy wilderness stuff like pricing and staffing as well as the more rugged responsibilities like clearing campsites and focusing on wildlife mitigation (aka bear vigilance).
The landscape is stunning and the buildings themselves are super charming. Both of the buildings have three bedrooms, kitchens, water wells and propane and solar systems. The San Juan forest itself is 1.8 million acres and the property is perched on 597,373 of those, so aside from interacting with the folks you’re renting to, things should be pretty solitary. The permit will last for two years, with an option to extend an additional five.
