Sometimes, once you fall in love with a specific neighborhood, the perfect home will eventually come to you. For architect, ARQUISTE founder, and fragrance developer Carlos Huber, it was Manhattan’s dreamy West Village neighborhood. He had lived on the block for four years before a two-bedroom apartment came on the market.

“I fell in love with this apartment because of its dedicated spaces: a proper dining room, a sunny living room, cozy bedrooms, and a perfect-size home office,” Carlos shares. “It was the perfect apartment for our lives and my business.”

So, six years ago, Carlos and his husband, plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Timberlake, MD, PhD, bought the apartment. While the home had great bones, it was built in 1899 and renovated in the 1960s (Carlos says the bathroom was even older!), so it needed some TLC to reflect their aesthetics — but the couple could see the apartment’s potential.

“It was a diamond in the rough, the type of apartment you need to dedicate yourself to renovate,” Carlos says. A real West Village gem ready to be polished.”

The 833-square-foot apartment got a “complete gut renovation,” as Carlos calls it, that spanned updating the plumbing to crafting a custom bookshelf in the living room. But all of the work was worth it.

“It’s got all our personality. We love historic interiors, we love art, we love books,” Carlos explains of the home they share with “his majesty, Chorizo” (their mini-dachshund). “Every room tells a story and is filled with color, textures, and art. It’s artsy while feeling put together, and warm and inviting yet very organized.”
