Here Is When People Are Decorating for the Holidays This Year
The festive season has begun, and for some people, so has the holiday decorating. With many of us spending the holiday season in quarantine and away from loved ones, it’s a given that some people may want to start the celebrations a little earlier this year. While some people are keen to get their decorations up as soon as the clock strikes midnight on Nov. 1, others may prefer waiting until Thanksgiving has been and gone.
It’s an age-old debate, and while there are strictly no rules for when you should deck your halls—Tan France decorates for Christmas on Halloween—it’s good to know when most people will get out their holiday decorations. Thumbtack, a home management platform, conducted its first-ever Holiday Home Hosting Survey, speaking with more than 1,000 people to find the U.S.’s holiday decorating habits.
Below, key findings from the study:
Many people are ready for the holidays to start early
After spending the 2020 holiday season in quarantine, people are ready to wave goodbye to Zoom Thanksgiving dinners and virtual holiday parties, making way for the IRL celebrations. According to the study, 41% of people want to get the festivities started as soon as possible.
Many people prefer to decorate around Thanksgiving
The study found that 43% of people believe that Thanksgiving is the sweet spot for holiday decorating—between Thanksgiving Day and the Sunday after. You could incorporate holiday decorating into your Thanksgiving festivities, bringing everyone around the Christmas tree after filling up on turkey and sweet potatoes, or you could wait until a few days after and grab a bargain on a tree and ornaments in Black Friday sales.
Most people plan to leave their decorations up until January
According to the study, more than half of people (59%) plan to extend their holiday decorations into January, brightening up the gloomy New Year with the bright lights of the Christmas tree. They won’t be up too long though, as 46% report that they take them down earlier than they’d like because their spouse prefers they get taken down. It’s all about compromise.
6% want to leave decorations up year-round
Interestingly, 6% of survey respondents believe you can leave holiday lights and outdoor decor up all year, which is certainly one way of keeping things merry and bright. If you’re part of the 6 percent, there’s plenty of stylish and subtle holiday decorations that will look great throughout every season.
