Yelp Has Released Its 2022 Home Trend Report, Including Tips From Jeremiah Brent
Interior design lovers may attest that there is nothing better than trend forecasting season, where the biggest names in the home and digital space predict the styles we ought to be looking out for in the year ahead. One of the latest trends to hit inboxes this year is from Yelp, whose annual home trend report features expert comments from one of our favorite designers, Jeremiah Brent.
From bold wallpapers, raw materials, and a shift in our home office spaces, Yelp is predicting 2022 to be a year of real change in the home, shifting away from full-scale renovations and focusing more on the finer details and aesthetics.
“Sifting through Yelp’s rich data, I saw many of the trends I’d begun utilizing in my recent design projects reflected. 2022 will be all about dusty blues and textural finishes, along with incorporating raw materials like stone, and a return to working with local artisans,” Brent says in a press release. “People will gravitate towards the ‘lagom’ lifestyle, embracing its celebration of moderation and functional simplicity when it comes to home design and decor,”
With a 64 percent increase in searches for drapery and backsplash searces rising by 34 percent over the last year, Yelp says that this indicates a desire to add thoughtful and elegant touches to existing spaces. Additionally, searches for “butler pantry” increased 100 percent year-over-year from October 2020 to October 2021, and dusty blue cabinetry also saw a significant increase in popularity.
Brent agrees, who has recently been incorporating light blue hues into his design work.
“I’m not one that naturally gravitates towards color, but I’ve recently been incorporating certain hues of blue into my designs to canvas a space. Muted and textural applications of blue are certainly having a moment,” he says. “I recently enveloped an entire living area in Los Angeles with dusty blue plaster walls. Whether it’s adding an accent wall, drapery, or decorative pillows — look to dusty blues in 2022 for a timeless moment of color,”
Yelp reports that searches for mid-century modern are up nearly 50%. According to Brent, cane is key and you should consider incorporating the timeless material to breathe new life into your space for 2022.
Searches for bright and bold wallpaper are up by a dramatic 167 percent, and earlier this year, Yelp collaborated with wallpaper brand Chasing Paper for a limited-edition collection. Although hygge style will not be going anywhere, lagom is in. Literally translating to the word “moderate”, lagom leans into the less is more mindset, and is a minimalist’s dream. The search term “lagom” saw a 33 percent increase in just two months, so it’s expected that this trend will be all the rage in 2022.
Finally, Japandi design has seen an increase of 27 percent. Japandi design is the perfect mix of Scandinavian functionality and Japanese rustic minimalism that creates an overall feeling of art, nature, and simplicity. Think muted color palettes, warm accents, and rustic finishes.
“The beautiful thing about this return to Japandi design, another form of organic minimalism, is that it can be implemented throughout an entire space or with the simple addition of a piece or two,” notes Brent. “Try starting small with a textural side table or vase. There are so many ways to begin experimenting with the aesthetics of Japandi design without having to completely renovate your home.”
