The Historic Brooklyn Building Is for Sale for a Cool $6.5 Million—and, Boy, Would It Be a Project
Gowanus is changing. The small neighborhood in Brooklyn between Park Slope and Carroll Gardens is hugely popular, with amazing restaurants and a bar scene that attracts both new residents and visitors alike. (Quite the transformation for a canal that once tested positive for STIs and at one point in time was home to hundreds of rabbits with syphilis—that’s just New York, baby!)
But some things truly never change—like the historic building on Third Avenue and Third Street. The Coignet Stone Company Building, with its classic cornices, is a nod to years past (literally). It was constructed in 1873 and is a registered historical landmark. And it really hasn’t changed—like, at all. One peek into the building shows that it needs quite a bit of renovation. And by quite a bit, I mean a lot. A lot, a lot. Like, whoo boy, that’s gonna cost ya!
But imagine walking down that grand staircase! (After it’s rebuilt!) Impressing your guests with those 12-foot ceilings! (After they’ve been replaced and reinforced!) Being SO CLOSE to a Whole Foods! (Did I forget to mention that part? Yes, this is the building directly next door to the Gowanus Whole Foods). Yeah, old meets new in this corner of Brooklyn and the juxtaposition is definitely funny and very New York but also rather convenient, no? It’s possibly a project worth taking on—if you’ve got the money to spend.
There’s no denying that the building is a stunner—if you’ve walked in the area, you know it’s the subject of many photos. Listed at $6.5 million, the two-story building has a huge basement with 11-foot ceilings, so it’s basically three levels. And with three bedrooms and one bath, it’s ready for some TLC. Are you ready to channel your Chip and Jo? Go for it. Then invite me over. Until then, I’ll just admire it on my romantic, dreamy walks home from Whole Foods.
