I considered myself lucky to have not one, but two closets in my tiny Brooklyn apartment, but boy, were they ugly. They both had shiny, faux wood grain doors, and one of the doors consistently fell off the tracks when I tried to slide it open. Looking back, I'm not sure why I didn't invest some time and a few dollars to fix them. If you are currently battling with an ugly closet, here are 5 DIY ideas to give it an upgrade.

1. Replace them with a lightweight sliding barn door. Remove your old doors and replace them with a DIY lightweight version of the classic sliding barn door. DIY from Vintage Revivals.

2. Paint faux molding. Grab some paint and tape, and upgrade your sliding closet doors with faux molding. DIY from Casa de Lewis.

3. Give them an architectural lift. Janet used low-cost canvas stretcher bars from the art supply store and attached them with 3M adhesive strips. DIY from Janet Lee via Curbly.

4. Paint them with chalkboard paint. Cover faux wood grain doors with chalkboard paint to create graffiti fun for you or your kids. DIY from Wispy House.

5. Minimize mirrored closets by adding frost. DIY from HGTV Rate My Space.
