I write about house tours (but I love a good kitchen and kids' room article). My work can be found across AT Media, including The Kitchn and Cubby. I’ve been writing about home-related topics for nearly five years and love seeing how people make their homes unique.

Some furniture finds are just so good that it’s possible for the rest of a home’s decor to revolve around them. When Rachael Harvey spotted a set of mid-century modern AllModern chairs included in Apartment Therapy’s Small/Cool pop-up exhibit, she knew that they would be the focal point of her 275-square-foot apartment

These Velvet Chairs Make a 275-Square-Foot Apartment Feel More Expensive

Several of the items in Rachael’s apartment were gifted by her well-traveled uncle; however, after spotting the chairs in the wild, she felt comfortable making a “splurge” on the set, she says in the video above. It wasn’t necessarily a risky purchase, though. In addition to being Apartment Therapy approved, the chairs have a five-star rating.

“I always wanted chairs with this look and these chairs exceeded all expenses I had. I am so pleased, great quality and price,” Lemonia, an AllModern shopper, wrote online. Tiffany, another shopper, wrote online, “I LOVE these chairs. Super cute, retro but modern. Fits perfectly in my space! They are comfy, a little more on the firm side but you sink into it a bit. I am happy with this purchase! Very quality and heavy feel to them.”

A set of two costs under $300 (at $279) and comes in four colors. While Rachael chose the Olive version, there’s also Cognac, Platinum, and Sapphire. It’s not just the deep velvet that makes these chairs look luxe; the gorgeous rattan detailing on the backrest adds to the luxe look. And the slim chrome frame is perfect in a small apartment because it doesn’t add visual bulk.

Finding small-space, budget-friendly furniture has become a skill of Rachael’s since living in the less than 300-square-foot apartment. (She also utilizes a multi-functional coffee table from Amazon.) The chairs paired with the skinny bistro table create a dedicated dining area without making the apartment feel overcrowded. And while Rachael is studious about giving items away to her neighborhood’s Buy Nothing Facebook group when it begins to feel cluttered, I don’t think she’ll be getting rid of these mid-century modern chairs anytime soon, thanks to their timelessness.

Seventies color palettes and fashion are hot again, so why not MCM furniture, too? On top of that, authentic mid-mod pieces, at their best, were practical, durable, comfortable, and timeless,” Apartment Therapy’s Executive Home Director, Danielle Blundell, explains. “Isn’t that something we can all get behind as consumers? And for that reason, I don’t see ‘mid-century modern’ going anywhere for a while. And if it does lose a little of its freshness, it’ll inevitably come back once again for the same reasons.”

If you have a small home and want to buy a furniture set that won’t take up too much space, consider these AllModern chairs. For Rachael, it was a worthwhile splurge that’s an investment piece to last. These chairs aren’t the only cute furniture featured in the video above.
