7 Creative Ways to Store Your Bike in a Small Apartment
Bikes are great for getting around without causing any of the harmful pollution of cars. But they can be a bit of a handful when it comes to storing them — especially if you live in a small space. Check out these clever apartment bike storage ideas to keep your wheels nearby but out of the way.
Add a floating shelf on the wall.
Who says floating shelves are just for books? Take the coolness of that look and apply it to your bike. The homeowners of the historic Amsterdam home pictured above did just that, propping the road bike up onto a historic brick wall, where it hangs like an art piece when not in use.
Hang it from the ceiling.
Rachel Yacapraro and Brian Willard, a couple from Chicago, took advantage of the sometimes odd spaces left when old buildings are chunked into condos or apartments. Instead of taking up valuable floor space with bike storage, they went vertical, utilizing the area above an otherwise awkward hallway wall to hang the bike from the ceiling.
Create an entryway bike hanger.
Apartment space in New York City is at a premium, which the renters of this 900-square-foot home know well. They keep their bikes hung up on the entryway wall, making it easy to get in and get settled, and it acts kind of like a bike garage.
Mount fold-up bikes on the wall.
Washington, D.C., couple Sarai Reed and April Lawrence split a 513-square-foot condo — so they know they need to be minimalist and economical with their space. Their bikes both fold up and hang neatly on wall-mounted racks, which is especially convenient, as they don’t have any extra storage space.
Create a bike station.
If you have a spot that’s mostly unused space, give it a purpose by creating a bike station. Homeowner Jungwon Kim did just this in her Brooklyn home, converting the space beneath the stairs into an area for bike storage.
Line them up.
Cyclists with more than one bike can turn them into a hanging wall art installation by lining them up, as Jevon Lake did in his Phoenix condo. The lines of the bicycles on the wall echo the modern, industrial style of his place.
Store them outside.
Capitol Hill renters Amy Zeller and Jeremy are blessed with an outdoor patio space — and they use it to their advantage by hanging up their bikes outside. They’re flush against the wall, though, so as not to take up any of that precious nature connection.
