Article’s Best-Kept Secret Is a Kitchen Island That Makes Small Spaces Look Custom-Made
I’ve always lived in apartments with absurdly tiny kitchens — I’m talking, barely any counter space — so I’m not exaggerating when I say that I’d probably starve without my rolling kitchen island. The one I have has been with me through multiple moves, but I can’t shake the fact that it just looks … temporary. Its clunky design stands out (but not in a good way), and it’s not exactly built to last. The construction feels flimsy and unstable, like it could cave in at any moment (honestly, it’s only a matter of time). So when I spotted the Holme Kitchen Island during my visit to Article’s Vancouver showroom earlier this year, I was genuinely impressed. I’m surprised more people aren’t talking about it!
Accessible luxury is kind of an Article specialty, and the Holme Kitchen Island is exactly that. It looks like the chic, custom-made kitchen island of my Scandinavian dreams, and it’s tailor-made for tiny kitchens like mine. Needless to say, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since seeing it in-store. Keep reading to learn why.

- There’s space for two counter-height stools

Why It’s Perfect for Small Kitchens
No shade to the island in my kitchen right now (it’s served me well enough!), but the Holme Kitchen Island is an upgrade on every level. The smooth, speckled quartz countertop and airy, white-oak finish look stylish and expensive. Its rounded corners and tactile wood grain give it a relaxed, Scandinavian feel. I think it would bring a custom, high-end look to all kinds of kitchens.
Despite its small footprint, the Holme Kitchen Island pulls its weight in terms of storage. The two drawers are 16 inches wide and 13.5 inches deep, which gives you plenty of room to stash silverware and all your most-used kitchen tools. Oh, and they’re soft-close, which adds to the island’s high-quality feel. Two 38.5-inch-wide open shelves can be used to store anything from cookware and stemware to plates, bowls, and serving platters that can be tricky to store. Best of all, there’s legroom on the opposite side so you can scoot two counter-height stools underneath — it’s a dining area as well as a prep station.
Compared to my current kitchen island that wobbles and shakes in the worst way, the Holme Kitchen Island feels downright solid. The fact that there are no casters on it makes it feel like a permanent fixture in your kitchen. It’s also contract-grade (most Article pieces are!), which means it’s durably designed and rigorously tested for commercial and residential use. It’s super sturdy and can withstand everyday meal prep, dinners, and even homework.

Should YOU Buy the Holme Kitchen Island?
If, like me, you’re tired of making do in a small kitchen with a tiny, “just okay” kitchen island, I think the Holme is the ultimate upgrade. It’s a prep station, dining area, and workspace rolled into one exceedingly stylish and well-made piece. And it’ll add serious storage space to kitchens that are lacking. While it’s not inexpensive at $1,199, it’s considerably cheaper than comparable islands at other high-end stores — and definitely cheaper than having something made to order (despite looking totally custom).
Heed my advice: Don’t waste your money on “temporary,” poorly made kitchen islands that don’t hold their weight in the kitchen. I wish I had taken the plunge and invested in the Holme way sooner. It’s a piece that I’d keep for years to come and, dare I say it, would make cooking at home so much more palatable.
