Large art leaning against white wall in white room with desk and chair, tufted accent chair, and large windows.

After almost four years of living in my apartment, I still haven’t installed curtains in the two big windows in my living room. Admittedly, for the first year or so, I was basking in the newfound natural light that this apartment afforded me. But as time has passed, I’ve realized that I might be OK with some shade now and then (especially when I want to flick on a movie marathon and “sofa sprawl”).

But being that this is a rental apartment, I’m hesitant to drill holes in the walls to hang curtains. So, when I came across the super-clever and unexpected way to block out the sun and ensure privacy without reaching for a single tool, I was super impressed.

In the powder room of Bo Shepherd and Kyle Dubay’s eclectic and vintage Detroit home, a striking piece of artwork blocks the bottom part of the window. It’s a bright, cozy room with golden walls complemented by striking dark beadboard. But what likely makes the space so lively is the large window.

Having a window in a bathroom is a blessing (such gorgeous light!) and a curse (privacy, please!), but Bo and Kyle found a way to keep their natural light without being disturbed. Plus, it’s a great way to display beautiful art without hammering holes into walls to hang it.

I love Bo and Kyle’s clever no-curtain-necessary window hack and I think I’d like to test it myself. Next up is finding a piece of artwork as beautiful as theirs. This isn’t the only gorgeous space in their house — visit the full home tour to see more.
