Even if your bedroom is barely bigger than your bed, you still need a spot somewhere to park your alarm clock, your cell phone, your nighttime reading, that glass of water you might need to reach for in the middle of the night. So we’ve scoured the internet for nightstand options that will provide you with a place to stash your stuff, while hardly taking up any space at all. You Can’t Go Wrong With This Classic Kitchen Color
Here at Apartment Therapy, we love a colorful kitchen. But we also recognize that painting your kitchen is a little different from say, painting your living room or bedroom. It feels a little more scary, a little more permanent. It can also affect your home’s resale value. If you love color, but these things have you feeling a little trepidatious, why not consider blue?

Hue Knew: Two Trending Colors That Are Even Better Together
I’ve always been a huge fan of pink and green together, and the current trend towards more somber, desaturated colors has put a fresh new spin on this classic combo. Hunter green and dusty pink are beautiful on their own, of course, but they’re even better together. This kitchen from Little Greene pairs a pink that’s just a wee bit bubble gummy with a dark green (and an oak worktop) that balances it out nicely.

Here’s the Secret to Not Spending Too Much on Expensive Tile
It is a good time to love tile. Beautiful patterns and shapes abound. But unfortunately for those us on a budget, a lot of the most beautiful tiles are just way too expensive to use for a whole wall, a floor, or even a backsplash. So we’ve come up with some creative ways you can incorporate just a little bit of that amazing tile you love, so you can enjoy its loveliness without breaking the bank.

Before & After: Faith & Mike Create a Bathroom
Most of our Renovation Diary projects involve transforming an existing space. This one was different because Faith and Mike chose to create a bathroom in their 1920s Columbus home where before there was only a sleeping porch. Originally the space was only 7 feet tall, with a sloping floor that would have to be replaced. It was a unique project, and a unique challenge. (You can see many more photos of the original space in the post that introduced Faith and Mike’s bathroom remodel.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian Houses
When Frank Lloyd Wright began practicing architecture at the turn of the 20th century, American suburbs were a pastiche of borrowed European architectural styles. But Wright had a vision; he wanted to create a style that was uniquely American, inspired by the landscape and free of associations with the old world. He called this unique style “Usonian”, a play on “USA.

7 Kitchens That Are Rocking an L-Shaped Layout
One of the most important kitchen design decisions you’ll make, both for looks and functionality, is the layout. You have a few options—the tried and true U shape, or the elegant and functional galley shape. But if you love entertaining, and love the look of an open kitchen, there’s another kind of kitchen layout that’s worth a look: the L shape. An L-shaped kitchen has just two runs of cabinetry, arranged at right angles to each other. (The name pretty much says it all.

Adventures in Urban Gardening: The Fire Escape Farm
I love New York and I love my itty bitty apartment, but one of the things that’s been the hardest about downsizing from nearly 1,000 square feet to 250 is not having room to garden. There’s something about growing things, I’m convinced, that is good for the soul. So this year I decided that I would try my luck with a little garden on the fire escape.

8 Discontinued IKEA Pieces We Wish They Would Bring Back

The 5 Cardinal Rules for a Super Organized Home
I used to think that having a neat, organized home was all about effort. My house, I reasoned, was a little bit of a disaster simply because I didn’t want to put that much work into it. But what I’ve realized, over the years, is that having an organized home is a lot less about the amount of time you spend cleaning up and a lot more about how smart you are about where you put things.

Before & After: Meg and Josh’s DIY Mudroom Renovation
Shortly after moving into their Chinook, Washington home, Meg and Josh decided to tackle a big project: transforming their existing laundry room and breakfast room into a single, open mudroom/breakfast nook combo. Before the project began, the breakfast room and laundry room were separated by a wall, making the small house seemed more cramped. Meg and Josh envisioned a single, open space the would serve as breakfast nook, laundry room, and mudroom all in one, with lots of built-in storage.

Laminate countertops get a bit of a bad rap. Before the Era of Granite, they were everywhere, but now laminate gets poo-pooed as the cheap choice, the one that you would only pick if you couldn’t afford anything else. Laminate countertops have become the carnations of the kitchen world. But just as carnations can be surprisingly appealing, a laminate countertop, in the right kitchen, can be really beautiful. Open shelving, currently a wildly popular choice for kitchens, has a lot of advantages: it feels lighter, visually, than a big block of upper cabinets, and it can be a really beautiful way to display treasured dishes. It also means that all your dishes are exposed to the dirt and grime of the kitchen, which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. If you love the look of open shelving but not the maintenance aspect, allow me to present an alternative: glass front cabinets.
