When a bathroom has bad lighting, your daily routines can really suffer. Showering in the dark isn’t very energizing, and grooming and makeup routines can become tricky when done in unflattering light.

Tina Tuason (@hometings_) knew she had to do something about her “dark” and “dated” bathroom — not only to improve her day-to-day, but also to make the bathroom match the rest of her light, colorful, and modern home. So, the demo process began.

Removing the protruding vanity made more room.

Tina says the bathroom overall had a “dated vanity with unsightly fixtures. It protruded a lot [and] created minimal space for walking.”

So the old vanity had to go. Tina hired a professional contractor who replaced it with a glossy white Moreno Bath vanity that better hugs the wall and provides more space for moving around. This upgrade alone made the bathroom look and feel a lot larger than it did before.

The demo process also revealed rotten wood and degrading plumbing, so the existing bathtub also had to go. It was replaced with a new tub that had much cleaner lines to better match Tina’s modern aesthetic.

“A trusted contractor is underrated,” Tina says. “You also just want to always be available to see the progress so you can catch problems early and … address your needs quickly.”

White paint and a new mirror make the bathroom much brighter.

That dated box light above the vanity in the original bathroom was, well, definitely dated, but Tina still wanted ample light around her mirror. She decided to lean into the modern vibes and chose a smart mirror with a backlight for getting ready in the morning.

“It’s so much brighter and more spacious,” Tina says of the after.

Tile on the walls adds texture and (subtle) color.

Finally, tiles are the star of the show. Tina opted to leave one wall white and untouched and tiled the other three to match the floor — and the rest of her home.

“I love grid-style tiles and checkers!” Tina says. “It’s literally everywhere throughout the house. I wanted to keep all the same grid-style tiles but use different color tiles or grouts in all our bathrooms and kitchen so that it maintains a clean aesthetic.”

In the bathroom, she went with a nude-ish pink. “We actually got super lucky with this matte blush grid-style tile because it was on clearance!” Tina says. “It was exactly what I was looking for. We saved more than half the price!”

Tina adds that the simple square tile look has a “classic and timeless appeal.” Not to mention, the squares complement the checkered bath mat and towel nicely.

“The best part was choosing all the design pieces like the tile, vanity, shower curtain, floor mat,” she says of her bathroom redo. “Seeing it come together made us really happy.”

And best yet, after the bathroom reno, Tina and her husband made room for one more small project. “We figured since we have leftover tiles, why not make a pedestal table?” Tina says. “It worked out great, and we love it!”
