Framing your photos and artwork used to be a big to-do. But these days, there’s no shortage of online companies that allow you to upload photos or mail in artwork — so all you have to do is customize your frame, then sit back and relax while you wait for that empty space on your wall to be filled.

Some of the best framing services out there offer a wide range of frame styles, mat colors, and nitty-gritty customization options. Whether you’re hoping to have the framing handled before your art arrives at your doorstep or planning to DIY, we’ve assembled seven excellent online framing options for you to explore.

Quick Overview

A Quick Look at Some of the Best Framing Services

What to Consider in a Framing Service

IRL or online?

Most of the options on our list are online-only services, which is great because it means anyone anywhere can order a beautiful frame for their art. However, it can be nice to be part of the process! If you’d prefer to work with a pro to customize your frame in person, Framebridge has locations in 17 states — more on them below!

Frame style, shape, and size

What type of frame do you need? Some of the framing services on our list offer a hodgepodge of shapes and sizes, while others stick to the traditional rectangle. Whether you’re filling a hole in your gallery wall or displaying a diploma, you’ll want to pick the framing service that caters to your needs.

When it comes to shipping frames, acrylic is king

When I ordered my first frame online, I was disappointed that it was covered with acrylic instead of glass. But the truth is, glass is too fragile to ship safely — imagine your precious piece arriving in, well, pieces! Luckily, most online framing services offer a variety of acrylic finishes, and they all look great. You won’t miss glass, trust me.

Printing needs

Last but not least, keep in mind whether you need your piece printed or not. Most services on this list let you upload your photo directly to their site (or even mail in an art piece) so they can ship your frame with the image inside. Or, if you’d rather keep the piece close, you can upload the image to get a sense of the design while you’re shopping and assemble it yourself when the frame arrives.

The 7 Best Places to Get Your Art Framed

1. Great for photos: Frameology (wall frames starting at $19)

From our partner

If you’re looking to upload your photos and artwork for framing, you’ll want to check out Frameology. You can order a single photo to be framed, or build an entire gallery wall that comes complete with a paper template to help you organize and hang your pieces. The brand offers super-speedy (typically under a week) flat-fee shipping and, in addition to framing, Frameology will also print your photos on magnets, puzzles, and even a stainless steel water bottle.

Some considerations: Frameology is an excellent choice for homes that prefer more traditional frames with white matting. If your design aesthetic tends to be colorful or funky, there are other brands on this list that might better fit your style.

2. For maximum customization: Simply Framed (wall frames starting at $55)

If you’re particular about paper and hardware, Simply Framed is one of the most customizable online framing services around. You can upload an image or send in your artwork, or order a frame or print on its own. Then, once you’ve picked your frame style, you can choose between several types of photo paper, acrylic covers, and even the mounting method the brand uses to secure your art. And, like Frameology, there’s also a gallery wall tool to help you customize, frame, and hang your collection.

Some considerations: Simply Framed is trusted by artists and boutique galleries for their high-quality framing. However, that means it’s also one of the more pricey options on this list — we found that the “Starting At” price started significantly lower for each frame than the price of the final design when added to cart.

3. For color enthusiasts: Frame It Easy (wall frames starting at $17)

I’ve actually been using Frame it Easy for my own framing needs over the last year or so, and have been extremely pleased with the experience. As the name implies, it’s super easy to customize your frame and matting for just about any size piece. I’m a colorful gal, and they have a ton of pretty mat options (you can even order a matboard on its own in literally any Hex color!) and a nice selection of wooden and metal frames to choose from. You can upload a picture of your art to see what the finished product will look like before you buy, or submit your photo or artwork so the brand can frame it for you. Either way, the frame comes with everything you need to hang your art like a pro.

Some considerations: The brand’s pricing is on the affordable side for framing, but they do charge a little more for shipping compared to other brands on this list (it all comes out in the wash in my opinion). It’s also worth noting that Frame It Easy only does rectangular frames.

4. For framing objects & textiles: Framebridge (wall frames starting at $70)

Who says framed art has to be flat? If you have a 3D memento you’d like framed, Framebridge is your best bet. While the brand definitely does frame mailed-in art or digital photo uploads, they also specialize in mounting objects, like a collection of iron on patches or a matchbox from your favorite restaurant. Framebridge has a gorgeous collection of frames (the most versatile on this list), many of which are fully customizable. And, as we mentioned above, if you’d prefer to work on framing your piece with a pro in person, there are IRL Framebridge storefronts in 17 states.

Some considerations: Depending on the size and complexity of the item you’re framing, Framebridge can be a little pricer. However, their pricing is fixed based on the size of your print or object, so you’ll always know what to expect. Plus, the brand offers a 100% Happiness Guarantee if you’re not in love with your piece when it arrives.

5. For wall or tabletop frames: Artifact Uprising (wall frames starting at $55)

Artifact Uprising is another brand that lets you upload your photos for easy, customizable framing. And, while most online framing services focus on wall-mounted pieces, Artifact Uprising also has a collection of tabletop frames, including wooden, metal, and display box silhouettes. In addition to wall and tabletop frames, the brand’s claim to fame is their photo books, which make a gorgeous gift. Regardless of what you order, Artifact Uprising offers a handful of shipping methods, ranging from standard to rush shipping.

Some considerations: While the brand is great for digital photo printing, there isn’t a physical mail-in option for Artifact Uprising. If you’re hoping to frame artwork or a physical photo, you’ll have to order a frame and mount the piece yourself.

6. For museum-quality framing: Level Frames (wall frames starting at $59)

Level Frames specializes in gorgeous, museum-quality frames that won’t totally break the bank. Whether you upload a photo, mail in an art piece for framing (shipping is free!), or order an empty frame to mount your piece at home, you can rest assured that the pros at Level will take the utmost care in assembling your finished product. The brand has a classy selection of wooden frames to choose from, and offers a few different neutral mat colors to choose from. They also specialize in framing vinyl records, which makes a really cool gift!

Some considerations: Level Frames does a high-quality job, but they do charge an additional $25 for in-studio framing. Also, they stick to the classics, like neutral matting and natural frame colors, so maximalists might be left wanting.

7. Great for renters: Mixtiles (wall frames starting at $15)

And now for something completely different! Mixtiles use a mounting method that forgoes the hammer and nails for a sticky adhesive pad. The adhesive backing is designed to be moved around, so you can rearrange your Mixtiles over time without adding holes in your wall. All you have to do is upload a photo, then customize the style and size of your frame and matting. It’s also a super affordable option (think: $15 for a 8”x8” frame), with free shipping on orders over $49.

Some considerations: While Mixtiles are fun and innovative (they make a great gift for a college kid!), if you’re looking for gallery-quality framing then this probably isn’t the place. It’s also important to note that the frames come as one piece, so it can’t be reused down the road for different artwork.
