Live Out Your Castle Fantasies: Rent This Brooklyn Turret for $4400 a Month
You don’t have to be a helpless damsel in distress to have Rapunzel-esque dreams: this historic, turreted Crown Heights home is available for rent—though it would help to have a royal partner to actually foot the bill.
Carved out of the “tower” section of this landmark home nicknamed “The Castle,” the two-bedroom, two-bathroom “penthouse” apartment has all the romantic character and charm one could want from a Brooklyn brownstone. If not the gentrifying price tag of $4,400 per month in rent — or $3.60 per square foot.
According to 6sqft, the tower-like, three-story Romanesque Revival brick residence was built in 1888 for $8,000 by Boston banker Francis T. Kimball and his wife and served as a single-family townhome. Skip to 1983, when it was purchased as a five-family residence by Denise Alves-Keppel (for $66,000), who then turned around and sold it in 2013 (for $1.32M). The buyer — Amber Mazor, owner of the Brooklyn-based restoration company Perfect Renovation — quickly set about turning the property into drool-worthy (if gentrified) luxury rentals, like this Unit D.
Exposed brick walls, walnut floors, native Belizean wood shelving, Moroccan tile work, and high-end appliances are all very fine — but the real appeal of this fairytale-inspiring rental is the master bedroom and en-suite nestled inside the tower’s peak, as well as the roof deck (with outdoor kitchen!) that showcases the slate-tiled turret from the outside, both with infinite Instagramability.
Only second to the apartment’s charmind details is its whole fascinating history, swirling with both the changing face of the historic property and the social shifts happening in the surrounding historic neighborhood in which it sits — all of which was recently chronicled with care by The New York Times in the story, “125 Years at 1372 Dean Street”, who write:
“Since 1888, the address has belonged to modest men and women who defined the ambition and determination of their generations: a banker, a 1900s-era female writer using a male pen name, a self-proclaimed capitalist, a female Jewish lawyer, a black judge in criminal court, a single mother and, now, a renovation company owner.”

If you need me, I’ll be dreaming of that master suite with exposed Tudor-style beams inside the turret and, yes, waiting for my own Prince Charming to call for my hair and snap me back to reality.
