There’s nothing that throws off the vibe of my apartment’s decor quite like technology clutter. Cables and cords left unmanaged, routers and printers left out in the open, and remote controls on end tables and coffee tables instantly make my space feel messy and less stylish. Luckily I discovered a simple solution for hiding my remotes in plain sight, using a very unexpected kitchen item: a butter dish.

Why You Should Put a Butter Dish in Your Living Room

The secret to concealing my not-so-pretty remote controls lies in the kitchen storage gem I least expected. Storing unsightly remotes inside a covered butter dish is one of the easiest ways to keep them within reach, but out of sight. As soon as I heard about this brilliant idea, I knew I had to try it.

I turned to my beloved Le Creuset Heritage butter dish, which I chose in the first place because of its appearance (it’s just plain gorgeous!). I figured if it’s beautiful enough for my kitchen, it’s beautiful enough for my living room. So I transferred it to my coffee table and placed my remotes inside.

Why a Butter Dish Makes the Perfect Remote Control Storage

I try to keep my coffee table empty except for my remotes, so now it just holds my butter dish on it instead, which is much more pleasing to the eye than the little silver rectangles. My living room is mostly light tones and natural materials, so my white ceramic butter dish fits right in with the decor. I think the key to making this quirky trick work is choosing a butter dish that matches your own personal decor style.

This chic, unexpected trick for hiding electronics is a great way to put to use something you likely already have — but if you don’t already own a butter dish, there are many places to grab one. While you can certainly find unique butter dishes at your local thrift store, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite butter dishes that you can shop right now below (including the one I personally own). There’s bound to be a perfect match for every style and color palette.
