The Lightweight, Affordable Blanket I’m Using as We Transition Into Spring (Bonus: It’s on Sale!)
Spring is just a few short weeks away, and here in Louisiana, we’re definitely feeling the shift. One day it’s hot and the next it’s cold, and I’m often torn about whether or not it’s time to trade the heater for the A/C. As the seasons change, bedding is especially important. Thick comforters and flannel sheets are great for winter but too hot for spring, and a light blanket might be too cold if the temperature outside drops unexpectedly.
That’s why I love layering my bedding throughout the year. During the winter, I love snuggling up with a weighted blanket or oversized quilt, but now that spring is so close, I’ve made the switch to a lighter alternative. California Design Den is one of my new favorite places to find affordable, high-quality bedding, and the brand’s herringbone Thermal Blanket is just the right fit during the transitioning seasons.
The California Design Den Thermal Blanket arrived neatly packaged in a burlap drawstring bag, which I thought was a really nice touch. (The bag is reusable and came in handy when I needed to deliver some long-overdue gifts!) When I unwrapped the blanket, I was really happy with its size. The Full/Queen blanket measures 90″ x 90″ for an oversized fit on the bed, which was exactly what I was looking for. Texture-wise, it’s made from soft, 100 percent combed cotton and looks incredibly cozy due to its all-over knit herringbone pattern. It’s the type of blanket you’d see at a cabin and bundle up in next to the fireplace. The only difference is that this one is an ideal weight for year-round comfort, not just a winter getaway.
Considering its size, the thermal blanket is surprisingly lightweight and breathable. It drapes beautifully and makes a fantastic layer for the bed if you want to add some heat without overdoing it with a thick and heavy option. In the winter, I used it as a (huge) throw blanket, but right now with the fussy pre-spring weather, I keep it on my bed in case I get a chill. (I suspect it will go back to being a throw when summer arrives.) If you like big blankets that completely cover you from head to toe, this one is for you. Just keep in mind that, because the knit isn’t an extremely tight weave, it can get little snags. I’ve only had one so far (despite tossing it around fairly often), but it’s something to be aware of if you have pets. You should also expect shedding, as the blanket produces quite a bit of lint in the dryer when you first launder it, so consider washing it alone.
I’m glad I found California Design Den’s thermal blanket to get me through this wishy-washy weather. It’s not too hot or too cold, and it keeps my bed comfortable during a time of year when the temperature swings quickly. I’m looking forward to warmer days, but until then, I’m keeping this blanket within easy reach.
