I Stopped Buying Toilet Cleaner After My Mom Showed Me This Hack
I live in an area with very hard water, which means I’m constantly battling chalky marks on glass shower panels and scale buildup in toilets. Ordinarily I use a heavy-duty descaling toilet cleaner, which does an excellent job of keeping bowl stains at bay. However, it’s not cheap — and with four toilets in my home to keep clean, I go through quite a lot of it. It also contains some powerful chemicals, including hydrochloric acid, so it’s not a good choice for the environment.
Last year when my mom stopped by my house and announced that she’d brought me a gift, it’s fair to say that denture cleaning tablets were one of the last things I might have expected. It turns out those fizzing little tablets aren’t just for dentures — they’re a surprisingly effective (and affordable) way to clean your toilet.
Why Denture Tablets Are Great for Cleaning Toilets
My mom explained that simply dropping one or two denture tablets into the toilet bowl and leaving them overnight would remove limescale buildup; they work as a super-easy and low-cost alternative to regular toilet cleaners. Based on how sparkling-clean my mom’s home has always looked, even when she’s had numerous kids and pets running around the house, I knew this was a hack I needed to try.
Denture tablets contain mild cleaning agents, which makes them a safe choice for cleaning surfaces in the home. They are also septic-tank-friendly, eco-friendly, and budget-friendly. But the big question is the following: Do they actually work?
What Happened When I Used Denture Tablets to Clean My Toilet
My mom gifted me a pack of Steradent tablets, so I put them to the test in my busiest bathroom, where a faint limescale ring had started forming around the waterline. Following her advice, I dropped two tablets into the bowl in the evening and watched them fizz.
The effervescing action is not only satisfying to watch, but it also helps to dislodge the stains clinging to the inside of the toilet without the need for any scrubbing on my part. Low-effort cleaning? Count me in! The water quickly turned dark blue, and I let it sit overnight. In the morning, I flushed the toilet to reveal a clean, sparkling bowl.
The next day, I used the denture tablets on all of the toilets in my house, with the same results: gleaming, bright-white lavatories. For maintenance, I drop a few tablets in each toilet bowl once a week and leave them overnight, which dissolves mineral deposits that cause unsightly rings and kills bacteria to remove odors. Officially declaring myself a convert, I have removed regular toilet cleaning products from my grocery shopping list — instead you’ll find me in the denture care aisle.
