Name: Meg Shackleton of Margaret Elizabeth Jewelry Location: Union Street; San Francisco, California Size: 750 square feet Years in business: 7 years When you step into the studio of Margaret Elizabeth Jewelry you are taken by the similarities in style between the jewelry line and the space where it is created. Metallics with pops of color and plenty of texture set the tone in this studio workspace and showroom.

Name: Pirate Toronto Location: Toronto, Canada Size: 10,000 square feet Years Occupied: 23 yearsPirate Toronto is one of Canada’s leading audio post-production houses, located in the heart of the city’s Design District.

Name: Thayer Allyson Gowdy Business Name: Thayer & Co Location: Bernal Hill, San Francisco Size: 500 sq feet Years in Business: 14 years The studio that Thayer Photography calls home is a great example of form meets function. Walking in, you have no doubt that actual business is conducted here — in fact, they seem ready for anything — and the most utilitarian elements, like the sealed concrete floors and custom plywood cabinets, are also some of the best stylistic elements.

Name: Sasha Darling, owner of BellJar Location: Los Feliz — Los Angeles, California Size: 1300 square feet You may remember Sasha’s Silver Lake bohemian home tour from a few years ago. For the past year, Sasha has been working hard on closing her San Francisco boutique, BellJar, and re-opening it in Los Angeles. It was a bittersweet goodbye in San Francisco, but Sasha sees her Los Feliz boutique as a fresh start and a cool new hangout for her dogs, Violet and Piglet.

Name: Ashley Jones and Laura Fama of Dimepiece LA Location: Downtown — Los Angeles, CA Size: 2,300 square feet Years lived in: Renting 3 years Dimepiece LA is a positive, stylish women’s street wear brand created in 2007 by Laura Fama and Ashley Jones. They’ve been running their brand out of a warehouse space in Downtown LA and just recently remodeled the front end.

Name: Coco Dávez Location: Chueca nieghborhood — Madrid, Spain Size: 193 square feet Years lived in: Rented since February Coco welcomes me smiling in her studio, in an old royal state apartment in the heart of the high Chueca neighborhood in Madrid. Her paintings are full of colors, and fill the small, bright studio space. An artist since she was a child, painting for Coco is a way to relax, to play and to remain connected with that inner child inside us all.

Name: Pixel Farm Digital Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota Size: 10,000 square feet Years in business: 17 years Most high tech spaces and production companies feel sleek and modern to the point of simplicity. Not Pixel Farm. I’d even go so far as to say it feels like home, which is a welcome departure. Now, I don’t know many people who have a Roman fountain in their living room, but it’s that kind of unexpected embrace of the bold and comforting that makes this space so fun.

Name: rabble+rouser, Christina Schroeder, Principal and Founder Location: Blake Street, Denver, Colorado Size: 7,000 Square Feet Years worked in: 3 years There’s nothing quite like an old warehouse space embracing color. It bolsters creativity and just makes everything feel alive. At rabble+rouser, bright blue and orange feature walls keep a space that once served as a furniture workshop feeling new, vibrant, and fresh.

Name: Fancy Tiger Crafts Location: 59 Broadway, Denver, Colorado Size: 4,000 square feet Years worked in: 2 years Fancy Tiger Crafts is kind of like a knitwear wonderland. With wall to wall shelves of wool and felt yarns being stocked by lovely ladies in hand-crafted sweaters, it’s definitely a place a shopper can really escape to for a while. But it’s not just a great little shop: it’s a community classroom for sewers, knitters and crafters of all skill levels.

Name: Homepolish Location: NoMad, New York, New York Size: 1,000 square feet Years worked in: 1 year When you’re a design team known for creating fabulous office spaces for high tech and high profile clients, the pressure can really be on when it comes to your own workspace. This was Homepolish’s challenge — and one that they’ve risen to with comfort and grace. The folks at Homepolish are known for mixing vintage treasures with modern and classic pieces.

Name: MICHI Atelier Location: Liberty Village, Toronto Size: 825 square feet Years occupied: 1 year Cutting-edge fashion designer Michelle Watson’s MICHI athletic wear is probably the most fashionable fitness apparel you’ve ever laid eyes on.

Name: Natalie Bowen Brookshire & Seth Brookshire Location: SOMA; San Francisco, California Size: 1,200 square feet Years in Business: Natalie 10 years, Seth 15 years, Studio has been open for one year The combined studios of Natalie Bowen Designs and Seth’s architecture firm Porro are just as you would expect from the creative duo.

Name: Tara Foley of Follain Location: 53 Dartmouth Street, South End; Boston, Massachusetts Size: 350 square feet Years at location: Opened in July 2013 Follain — Gaelic for “healthy, wholesome, and sound” — is just that. After realizing just how toxic beauty products were, Tara Foley began researching skin nutrition, ingredients, and chemicals.

Name: CEO Simone Vingerhoets-Ziesmann of Wilkhahn, German Furniture Manufacturer Location: Chicago, Illinois Size: 2,225 square feet Years lived in: 9 months Wilkhahn is a well-known and respected office furniture design and manufacturing firm with roots in Germany but with a global presence and offices around the world.

Name: Laura Castelló Location: Valencia, Spain Size: 215 square feet (20 m2) Years lived in: Rented 3 months Laura is the kind of person that loves simple things and enjoys the little pleasures. She’s an extraordinary artist who draws sweet portraits and makes art with soft colors. The workspace she uses for creating amazing illustrations is a beautiful room filled with art, neutral colors and the most incredible tiles in the world.

Name: The Lemon Bowl (Founders: Kate Zaremba, Linny Giffin and Holley Simmons) Location: Park View, Washington, D.C. Size: 500 square feet Years lived in: 1 year Visiting The Lemon Bowl—a retail space, shared workspace and workshop studio in Washington D.C.—is like being inside a gumball machine where all the treats are handmade.

Name: Masquespacio Location: Valencia, Spain Size: 1,076 square feet Years worked in: 3 years This incredible space has all the color. Masquespacio is an award winning creative consultancy created in 2010 by Ana Milena Hernández Palacios and Christophe Penasse. Combining the two disciplines of their founders, interior design and marketing, this Spanish design agency creates branding and interior projects through a unique approach that results in fresh and innovative concepts.

Name: Thimblepress headquarters Location: Jackson, Mississippi Size: 2300 square feet Years lived in: Rented 1.5 years In business for over three years, Thimblepress is “an art studio, sewing studio, design studio, woodworking studio, and basically anything creative that Kristen [the founder] wants to try her hand at next.

Name: Vanessa Matsalla Location: Carlsbad, California You had a look at designer Vanessa Matsalla’s California home earlier this week; it’s got cool Cali vibes, earthy textures and a lot of natural light. Her showroom in Carlsbad, California also serves as the office of her full-service interior design practice. Though a small space, it complements the look of her home, while giving off its own specific style vibes.

Name: Framebridge Location: Georgetown — Washington, DC Size: 2,800 square feet Time occupied: 9 months Picture this: a small, old house—rumored to have been Francis Scott Key’s—sits nestled on quiet residential street in historic Georgetown. Inside, a surprise: the lively, Instagrammable hustle of Framebridge, a fast-growing custom framing startup.

Name: Heather Lipner / Clashist Location: Downtown Fashion District; Los Angeles, CA Size: 1,600 square feet Years lived in: Less than a year; Rented Clashist is a fun fashion line that emblazons everyday wear with sentimental pop culture throwbacks. Their t-shirts, leggings, and accessories honor icons like Joan Rivers, Beavis & Butt-head, Bill Murray and so on. Welcome to their new digs in Downtown LA!

Name: National Forest // Co-Founded by Seven Harrington and Justin Krietemeyer Location: Atwater Village; Los Angeles, California Size: 2,400 square feet Years lived in: We’ve been in this building for seven years. We were down the road before that and a home-loft in the very beginning. National Forest is a design firm and creative consultancy located in Atwater Village.

Name: Honeywood Boutique and Workspace Location: Highland Park; Los Angeles, California Size: 900 square feet Years worked in: 1 year You may recall your heart skipping a beat when you perused Vanessa’s breathtaking Eagle Rock home last year. Well, prepare the defibrillator because Vanessa and her boyfriend Charlie have outdone themselves once again with their Highland Park shop and workspace, Honeywood.

Name: Kristen Pumphrey and Thomas Neuberger of P.F. Candle Co. Location:Arts District; Downtown Los Angeles, California Size: 1,700 square feet Years lived in: 1 year; Rent Kristen and Thomas, owners of P.F. Candle Co, began their operation, grass-roots-style, out of this downtown LA loft. Several employees, large shipments, and making the candles requires ample space, so they are lucky enough to have this amazing production space, plus an additional office that doubles as a showroom.

Name: Micha Thomas and Jaime Lawson of The Made In America Project Location: Laurel Canyon- Los Angeles, California Size: Converted sunroom into a home office 400 Square Feet Years lived in: barely a year, rented Merging their backgrounds in public relations and the fashion industry, Micha and Jaime have created The Made In America Project, which offers a badge of certification to 100% American-made products.

Name: Mark Cutler Design Inc. Location: West Hollywood, California Size: Two floor town house Years worked in: 12 years; Rented Mark Cutler has been designing interior and architectural spaces for years, making his name with residential designs for celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Steve Carrell. He’s a familiar figure on shelter magazines and HGTV, and his newest venture nousDECOR.com launched earlier this month.

Location: Richmond, VA Size: Front office space is 1,600 square feet, back space is 600 square feet Years lived in: 20 years Cabell Harris, the founder and owner of WORK Labs has created an environment that is bursting with creativity and fun. WORK Labs is a creative brand agency in Richmond, VA that promises you that they are always thinking.

Name: Ax + Apple / Founder Jamie Lyn Location: Downtown; Los Angeles, California Size: 800 square feet Years worked in: 1.5 years; rented Blue velvet tufted couch, Barcelona chair, tools and trinkets, a shrine to Rihanna and a fabulous disco ball… feast your eyes on the incredible downtown Los Angeles workspace of Ax + Apple, owned by jewelry designer Jamie Lyn.

Name: Cara Underwood/Underwood Letterpress + Stephanie Collins/Flipbooth Location: In the Unique Space of Downtown Los Angeles Arts District Size: 400 Square Feet Years lived in: Opened November 2013 Every time I visit a new office space inside The Unique Space, I fall in love. The latest is the worksplace of Underwood Press + Flipbooth. I was amazed that there was an old school traditional letter press machine and much more, decorating this small office.

Name: Zak Mroueh, Chief Creative Officer & CEO, Zulu Alpha Kilo Location: Toronto, Canada Size: 8,000 square feet Years occupied: 4 While many advertising agencies have a free-spirited and collaborative approach to the creative process, few have taken that philosophy to heart to the degree that Zulu Alpha Kilo’s founder Zak Mroueh has.

Name: Amy Tremper of Stitch & Hammer Location: Boulder, Colorado Size: 350 square feet Years lived in: 8 months; Rented Everyone meet Amy, owner and founder of Stitch & Hammer, a leather goods shop based out of Boulder, Colorado. What started as a desire to reconnect with her family heritage led to a serious side project and quickly (and perhaps somewhat unexpectedly) evolved into an established and fast growing business.

Name: Tamara Brink and Jessica Dolgan / The Humble Pie Store  Location: Baker Neighborhood, Denver, ColoradoSize: 1500 square feetYears occupied: 8 months Remember in elementary school, how there were those chicks who were (crazy) good at everything? I mean, they could paint, rock the perfect outfit everyday, nail the crazy math problem on the chalkboard, and even show up the boys in kickball?

Name: Black Eye Coffee Shop  Location: Highland Neighborhood, Denver, Colorado  Size: 1,200 square feet Years Occupied: 1.5 years, open for 8 months A year and a half ago Ali and Dustin ventured into a dilapidated storefront on Navajo street. It was a space they had walked past a number of times, but that night something was different. The “Coffee Shop Coming Soon” sign that had graced its facade for months had come down, and they were intrigued.
