In a world where home design is serious business, it’s important to remember not to take your home’s design too seriously. Home should be a place you love to be in and that reflects who you are. Artist Steven Nebraska‘s super small studio apartment in Florida is a great reminder of this. He describes his style as an experience, and while it’s likely not everyone’s taste, his home holds a valuable lesson in designing a space that feels good for you. “It’s an art experience. So that’s my style, to create an experience… from my heart, that makes me happy,” he describes in his video home tour.
There’s an almost shocking amount of color in the 300-square-foot home; the show-stopping stripes on the walls, doors, and furniture are the most striking element of the decor. Created by using electrician’s tape, his application of pattern is a little over-the-top (in the best of ways, in my opinion) but it’s a great example of customizing a rental! He’s certainly transformed what would have been a bland beige box into red, yellow, and neon green wonderland.
There’s a good reason this peek into his home is premiering on October 31st… his kitchen sports a Halloween theme! Black electrician’s tape shaped into cobwebs and squiggles creates the right atmosphere in the kitchen, along with a number of haunted house-esque DIY projects. “I decided to do a spook house theme in my kitchen. I wanted to do something fun… there’s nothing like Halloween, it’s the most interactive holiday there is,” he explains in his tour.
Along with being utterly one-of-a-kind, Steven’s home is also worth sharing because it’s just a good example of a maximalist creating a bold space that still functions. A Murphy bed acts as the home’s central focal point, but it can also be folded up and out of the way if he wants to double his living space. Other furnishings in the space are small and movable, perfect for a flexible room that needs to serve several functions. A tall dresser is storage and a place to display his artistic creations, but notice he uses any available surface as a spot to display his paintings. And he extended his small studio’s living space outside of his front door in what he calls his “Florida Breezeway,” making the most of his small home.
Be sure to watch the home tour video above that he filmed for us; and thanks to him for sharing this look into an incredibly unique home.
Tiny Tours are videos filmed by the homeowners and renters themselves, usually because they live in a location where Apartment Therapy doesn’t have videographers. It’s a way to see inside one-of-a-kind homes around the world. See more:
