This Clever Cable Storage Hack Is So Simple That I Can’t Believe I Didn’t Think of It Sooner

I write about house tours (but I love a good kitchen and kids' room article). My work can be found across AT Media, including The Kitchn and Cubby. I’ve been writing about home-related topics for nearly five years and love seeing how people make their homes unique.

Don’t get me wrong — I love living with my boyfriend (there are so many things to do together). Because of our comfort with each other, I don’t feel awkward asking (sometimes telling) him to take the trash out or lend a hand washing the dishes. And it’s not just great because of sharing chores (or because I enjoy his company), but also because he’s a super-talented musician, and I’m often front row at my own personal concert.

However, I’d be lying if the personal serenades didn’t come with their own set of frustrations. Namely, the snaking, seemingly endless, bunny-enticing (yes, we have a rabbit!), hazardous, and annoying instrument cables that come with his equipment. But when I saw the nifty hack in actor and content creator Kylen Chen-Troester’s modern home, nightmares of sprawling cords seemed to drift away.

Kylen’s partner, Paul Grant, is an actor and music-sound director, so they had a few cables of their own. Instead of flinging the cables into a cabinet with absolutely no order (guilty!), or shoving them behind amps right before guests come over (also guilty!), they had a plan.

In their home office, there are three pegs (which look like coat hangers!) that display their perfectly organized instrument cables. They’re situated right above the amp for easy access and can be swapped out for a jacket or purse hanger at a moment’s notice. Truly ingenious!

This instrument cable storage solution works perfectly for small spaces, too. There are other, more traditional cable organizers that you can buy (peep this Amazon option, for example), but they’re not as versatile. Small-space dwellers need multi-functional additions that can serve various purposes, just like these cord hangers.

If this tip intrigues you, you’ll want to check out the rest of the home tour. It’s not the only cool thing about Kylen and Paul’s home — they even created a miniature living room for their cat.
