Costco’s $25 Floating Orchids Look Better Than a $500 Florist Arrangement

Flower children and bona fide plant people, listen up! You need to run to your nearest Costco as soon as possible because there’s a new item in the plant section you need to see to believe. It’s a floating orchid, and it’s absolutely beautiful. The best part? You can grab it for just $25.

“These are unreal,” Laura Lamb from Costco Hot Finds on Instagram said in a recent video. “I just spotted floating orchids at Costco, and I’ve never seen orchids displayed like this before. They are so unique, and the way they’re suspended in that frame is just beautiful. There were also so many colors to choose from.”

Rather than your standard pot, this orchid (more specifically, a Phalaenopsis orchid) is nestled into a plastic pot within a moss ball (known as a kokedama). The kokedama is suspended from a metal frame to add even more interest. It’s such an impressive setup that it’s an all-in-one centerpiece or windowsill display.

And, as Laura mentioned, there are so many colors you can choose from. Her local Costco had yellow, pink, purple, and white orchids available, but your selection could vary depending on what your store has in stock currently.

Any plant person will tell you that orchids can be some of the most finicky plants to care for. But as long as you get a good routine down, you shouldn’t have any issues. One person in Laura’s comment section shared advice that many orchid owners have come to swear by: “Three ice cubes every week. Winter every two weeks. Had mine for over three years and [it] flowers every six to eight months.”

“The key to keeping Phalaenopsis orchids is a south-facing window. They will re-bloom almost year-round. LED lights are a great alternative,” another person added. It’s worth noting that you should place your orchid in a south-facing spot with filtered sunlight to prevent your plant’s leaves from burning.

The most crucial aspect? Don’t remove the Costco orchid from the plastic pot inside the moss ball. That barrier will help regulate the amount of water in your orchid’s soil. If you plant the orchid directly in the moss ball, you may end up with too much wetness and root rot.

Head to your nearest Costco to see if the floating orchids are available in the plant section. They’re so beautiful to look at, a fun challenge to care for, and so affordable you may even be able to pick up two different colors!
