When I was shopping for a loveseat for the New York City apartment I share with my boyfriend, Jeremy, and our dog, Duncan, I was looking for something very specific and small-space-friendly. The piece needed to be 65 inches long (maximum) and comfortable enough to fit two people, plus a pup. And because it was going in our home office (which is also our den), it needed to be small enough to fit easily between Duncan’s crate and our co-working desk. Finding a comfy sofa under 65 inches isn’t easy, and it was hard to find one that checked all my boxes.

Then I discovered Cozey and was offered a chance to test the brand’s Gaia Collection of customizable modular sofas. I jumped at the opportunity. After testing it in my own home, I can say that Cozey’s Gaia sofa is perfect for small spaces and pet owners.

Quick Overview

A Quick Look at Cozey’s Gaia Sofa

  • Fully modular with modern style (endless reconfiguration)
  • 3 fabric types, all with double rub for durability
  • 10 color options
  • Fully removable and washable slipcovers
  • D35 high-density foam cushions
  • 5-year limited warranty
  • Pet-friendly with OEKO-TEX® certified materials

Features That Stand Out

Cozey’s Gaia sofa is not only great because it features a very comfortable high-density foam cushion on a padded base, but it’s also offered in so many beautiful colors with three high-quality fabrics to choose from: Chenille, Performance Fabric, and Cozey’s exclusive Aquaforte™. I chose the Sage Chenille fabric, and it’s just as soft and luxurious as it sounds.

The sofa arrived in five neatly packed boxes, each with a number on the outside so we knew exactly where to start and what came next (it was like putting together a giant LEGO set).

I was originally worried that because each “section” was modular, the two bases would separate and easily push apart. But the sofas come with a connector that holds the two modules’ legs together, so they stay put. The connectors are designed for a snug fit around each leg, so there’s no possibility of them separating while you’re sitting or lounging. One warning: The connectors are a little challenging to align with the legs without seeing them (especially if you’re doing it on a rug, which we did). But once you lock them in, they work.

How It Went

I had a hunch that the Gaia sofa would be comfortable because the brand’s other collections have great reviews that rave about the furniture’s high-quality materials — and I was right! The sofa is so comfortable, but also stylish — it has clean lines and sleek armrests that don’t take up more space than necessary.

I’m also so happy with the Sage Chenille fabric I chose. Chenille fabric is essentially the alternative to velvet, but with added durability for everyday use and a little extra “fluff” from its ribbed pile. It’s so soft — I took the best two-hour nap the day after our sofa arrived.

Since getting Cozey’s Gaia sofa, I’ve been very happy with the configuration I chose for our space. Having a sofa with an armrest was important to me because a good corner nook is essential. But because our desk is against a wall with windows, I didn’t want an armrest on that side. I was worried it would box in my side of the desk, and I would feel too cramped working there.

So being able to customize which side of our sofa features an armrest really sealed the deal. Instead of feeling like we had to change our space for the sofa, this one let us adapt the sofa to fit our needs and home. And now I’m able to curl up with a book, Jeremy can play video games from the sofa, or we can relax together with Duncan after working all day — everyone’s happy with this sofa.

What we love

  • Deep, comfortable seating
  • Pet-friendly and completely washable slipcovers
  • Can easily add more modules for reconfiguration later on

Good to know

  • Takes 60 minutes or more to assemble
  • Assembly can be tricky and may require extra attention and effort for the parts to fit together perfectly (the module connectors specifically)
  • Slipcovers are a bit difficult to put on and may require a second set of helping hands

Should YOU Buy the Cozey Gaia Sofa?

Whether you need a pet- or kid-friendly option, a small-space solution, something that seats the whole family plus the dog, or a couch that works for a renter who moves often, the Gaia collection works in every space. But I’d particularly recommend the Gaia Sofa to those looking for a modular sofa with a modern silhouette that has washable slipcovers and comes in a variety of fabrics.
