This Is the New Small-Space-Friendly Lamp Trend Taking Over 2024 (It Looks So Unexpected!)

It’s no secret that lighting can make or break a space, but what if you don’t have space for a ton of lamps in the first place? Of course, you can always stick to wall-mounted fixtures without sacrificing your floor, although these don’t always emit the most light (and you’re still somewhat limited in the renter-friendly category). Luckily, there’s one new light trend I’m noticing that maximizes vertical height and looks incredibly unique — and I have no other term to call these than “elongated floor lamps.”

Recently, elongated floor lamps have started cropping up across a few modern home brands, and you’ll definitely know one when you see it. This trend is all about floor lamps with some sort of sturdy base, paired with a shade that’s — you guessed it — super elongated and dramatic-looking. In fact, the shade essentially is the whole light, with some measuring 3 feet tall or more. 

I first spotted this lamp style from Target as part of designer Justina Blakeney’s Jungalow line. Not only does the brand’s yellow design pack a cheery pop of color into any room, but the statement shade also has a scalloped silhouette for added visual appeal. A glossy ceramic base rounds out the look, while only requiring 13 inches of floor space. The whole piece stands 58 inches tall, effectively doubling as a light source and decorative focal point styled next to a couch, armchair, or bedside. 

West Elm currently has a more minimalist option, too — the Brynn Terracotta Floor Lamp. You still get the elongated shade component here, but the 23-inch-tall clay body feeds more into the overall height (58 inches, fully assembled). This lamp’s natural finish and linen shade would nicely complement a neutral color palette, but West Elm also has an asymmetrical white style to pair with just about any design aesthetic. 

Because these typically feature solid, durable base pieces to stay upright, elongated lamps do take up slightly more square footage than similar compact counterparts. That said, they can still easily integrate into tight, dark corners with an overall playful, eye-catching structure that you wouldn’t otherwise get from a standard floor lamp. I mean, just look at them — small-space lighting doesn’t get more fun than this!
